Bijnor (UP) The residents of a village in Uttar Pradesh have threatened to boycott the coming Lok Sabha polls if electricity is not provided in their area.

Even 13 years after being inducted into Uttar Pradesh government's Ambedkar Village development scheme, the Dalit dominated Khanpur Madho in Muhammadpur Deomal Block has not been provided with electricity as yet.

"We will boycott the polls if electricity is not provided to us. No candidate will be allowed to enter the village," Guljari Singh, an elderly villager said.

"Despite several requests to the Hydel department, electricity has not reached our village and we have been living in darkness," he said.

However, when contacted executive engineer of Hydel distribution Division, Najibabad, Rakesh Kumar denied having any knowledge whether the said village comes under the developmental scheme.

All Ambedkar villages were electrified in the state, Kumar claimed.

Ambedkar Village development scheme is a state government initiative that puts development on the fast track in select villages.

These select villages, known as Ambedkar villages, benefit from every scheme announced by the state and central governments.

The scheme was relaunched by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in September last year after renaming it as Bhimrao Ambedkar Rural Integrated Development Programme.

No electricity, so no vote, threatens UP village by Chandru Narayan on 09 Mar 2009

The Dalits think and always get anything they want by naming their illegally built colonies as Ambedkar colony, never ever realising that free electricity is a myth, no one should get it and no one should be enjoying the benefit without paying for it. Once the government gives free electricity and water to the people. they then think it is their birth right to get it for free, just like the SC/ST quotas for education and jobs, it looks like as long as India is going to be on the map there is going to be a quota for SC/ST. The Dalits do NOT want to adhere to any family planning methods, they have understood that to be Dalits and enjoy the quotas they need to multiply and make the votes be counted in their favor. Stop this nonsense, the crooked government is denying the other citizens who are paying for water and electricity by giving free electricity to the Ambedkar townships.

Priorities set for election by Subhash on 08 Mar 2009

In developed western democracies peoples needs are the agneda for election. In India it is good that we are learning to people's requirement to the political parties rather than getting carried away with cleaverly and conveniently devised promises to grab votes.
