Even though south Delhi’s challenge against an elevated line faces choppy waters, with a Group of Ministers (GoM) throwing its weight behind the DMRC, the Dwarka residents are undeterred. Their counsel, Ashutosh Lohiya, points out: “If the court is hearing the grievances of the posh Greater Kailash residents, they should hear ours too”.
Filing an application in the Delhi High Court recently to be made party in the ongoing spat between their “richer” cousins and the DMRC, the Resident Welfare Associations of Pocket-1, Sector 14, Dwarka
Phase-2, insist that they have to be “measured by the same yardstick as south Delhi residents”. Besides, they claim to have hands-on experience of the problems of an elevated metro track.
“The existing Metro rail in Dwarka is overhead. The experience of the residents shows that overhead metro has its own problems — noise pollution, electrical hazards and choking of existing infrastructure,” their application read.
Pitching in with south Delhi demand for underground tracks on certain stretches of the 20-km Central Secretariat-Badarpur network, the Dwarka community pleads the futility of constructing an elevated line without any “corresponding gain” to the locals.
The GoM headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had confirmed the plans for the elevated corridor despite the protests. The DMRC had contended that an underground stretch would escalate project costs.
