Wellington New Zealand have cancelled their cricket tour of Pakistan after the deadly attack targeting Sri Lanka's team there, New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan said.

"We're not going and I think that's pretty clear. I don't think any international team will be going to Pakistan in the foreseeable future," Vaughan told Radio New Zealand on Wednesday.

"Now we've seen that cricket can be a target and I think it creates a whole new set of issues and raises the security issue to a whole new level," he added.

New Zealand called off the tour, scheduled to start in November, after militants armed with grenades and guns ambushed Sri Lanka's players in Lahore on Tuesday.

Eight people died and seven players were wounded in the attack, which forced Sri Lanka to abandon their trip and threw a big question mark over international cricket in Pakistan - a co-host for the 2011 World Cup.

New Zealand officials are expected to meet their Pakistani counterparts in international meetings in April or June, where they are likely to discuss moving the tour to a neutral venue.

"I think the options will probably revolve around playing them at a neutral venue. They have played previous games in the Gulf states, in Abu Dhabi," Vaughan said.

The New Zealand cricket team cut short their 2002 tour to Pakistan after a suicide bomber blew up a bus outside the team's hotel in Karachi, killing at least 12 people.

pakistan - a pure nation by shailinder js on 04 Mar 2009

Pakistan should abandon all sports and play only Buskhazi. they can have international Buskhazi championship or may be call it Osama Bin Laden Buskhazi championship. All the rhetoric about we will hunt these terrorist is bundle of crocodile promises. They do not want any international contact so please give them that. It is trying to be a nation of schizotypal personality so let them be.

PAKISTAN by SV Sivasubrahmaniam on 04 Mar 2009

Not only can any team of games, no popular charismatic personality with in or out side Pakistan tour/visit Pakistan at this juncture. All the public figures inside Pakistan have to sit in home and talk to the public with print or electronic media. That is the gravity of the situation INSIDE Pakistan it appears. All the wings of the administration have to realise and work for improving the image and conditions of Pakistan. Otherwise what is the future I don’t know…? From this we Indians also have to learn lessons. All of us to work harmoniously and reduce tensions and stop cheap tactics of rousing wrong passions among the society for short term gains.

Dont be racial here by Saurabh on 05 Mar 2009

Hey Ravi, I wouldn't blame them for not touring any country in the sub-continent. Imagine what happened in Mumbai and now in Lahore? Are you safe in Mumbai? I dont think many people feel the same. So I dont think you should be talking about the mentality of the western countries. Well Murtuza wrote something which was funny and I dont think you should mix racism into it.
