New Delhi, January 10 The MCD will soon provide cellphones to School Inspectors (SI), Assistant Education Officers (AEO), Deputy Education Officers (DEO) and principals of those schools, that do not have landline connections. This was announced by MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta today.

MCD Education Committee Chairman Prithvi Raj Sawhney told Newsline that it being the duty of the SIs to inspect school attendance, teaching, cleanliness and mid-day meals and then report to the AEO on a daily basis, it was necessary that both functionaries be given cellphones so that they may stay in touch easily. Similarly, the DEOs, to whom the AEOs report, should also be provided official cellphones, he said. Sawhney did not have precise figures of number of MCD schools without landline connections. He said, however, that the number was small.

Sawhney said this year the wages of contractual teachers has increased from Rs 5,000 a month to Rs 9,500 a month. He said 1,200 primary school teachers and 150 female nursery teachers were working on contract basis in MCD schools. In addition to these, contractual appointment letters have been issued to 3,000 primary school teachers and 146 female nursery teachers, Sawhney said. In April, 2007, 337 teachers were promoted to the post of school principal to ensure that every school has a principal.
