Rajkot, May 16 Inmates tumble upon facts when they find friend missing from bed; find her in kitchen with culprit

Inmates of the Rajkot Ambedkar Women's Hostel run by the Social Welfare department, on Friday, exposed the sexual exploitation of a fellow minor student by the hostel watchman. The Rajkot rural police have registered an offence of rape against the watchman, Amra Bathwar, 50, who lured 15-year-Radha (name changed) into a sexual relationship. Ironically, there appear to be no lessons learnt from the recent Patan gangrape incident, as this government hostel meant for girl students of secondary classes has had no rector or warden since its inception in 2004.

The matter came to light when some students, on finding their friend missing from her bed, went to look for her in the other rooms in the hostel on Friday morning. The class X student of Adarsh Vidyalaya was found with Bathwar in the hostel kitchen.

The police said that the girls then bolted the kitchen door and summoned activists of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the police. District Backward Class Welfare Officer S F Macwan, who was summoned by the police, has registered a complaint against the watchman. The Social Welfare department has also initiated an internal inquiry.

As the girl is a minor, the police, after a medical examination, have registered an offence of rape against the watchman. Preliminary investigations by the police have revealed Bathwar to be a resident of Ganjiwad area, who had been exploiting the girl for quite some time now. "Bathwar has been caught red-handed. The girl was drawn to him since he belonged to her mother's village," said the police who interrogated both the girl and the watchman.

Located on Kalawad Road near Cosmoplex Cinema, the Social Welfare department provides residential facility and schooling to girl students of the backward classes from Std. VIII to X. Even though it's vacation time, 31 students of class X have stayed back in the residential school to prepare for the Board exams.

No rector or warden, only two watchmen to take care of 100 girls
The Social Welfare department-run Ambedkar Women's Hostel has had no rector or hostel caretaker since its inception in 2004, even though more than 100 students reside here. The Rajkot district Backward Class Welfare Officer S F Macwan has also admitted to the same. It is only two watchmen, who guard the girls at night. "The hostel has no accommodation facility for a rector even if the department were to recruit one," says Macwan.

The Social Welfare department, however, maintained that it was shocked by the incident, as there have been no such complaints by the students including against Bathwar, who has a clean track record. The Social Welfare department has decided to run a probe parallel to the police investigations.
