Kogelo (Kenya), March 5: American shock jocks, dirty tricks masterminds and political bloggers: Beware the wrath of an 86-year-old Kenyan villager.

A frown replaces the dimpled beam of Sarah Hussein Obama, grandmother of US senator Barack Obama, when asked on Wednesday about recent attacks on her grandson that include the spreading of rumours that he is secretly a Muslim and the repeated use of his middle name - Hussein - by a radio host at rally of the Republican presidential candidate.

“Untruths are told that don’t have anything to do with what Barack is about,” she said in the local Luo language, her gray hair smoothed neatly under a headwrap. “I am very against it.” Obama and fellow senator Hillary Clinton are close in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination after inconclusive results from caucuses on Tuesday.

Clinton, who was trailing Obama, won the crucial states of Texas and Ohio, which both have large numbers of delegates, and won big in Rhode Island. Obama’s thin lead narrowed further after he only picked up Vermont.

The closely fought race has inspired some Clinton supporters to try to portray Obama as dangerously foreign.

In recent weeks, two Clinton volunteers in the state of Iowa resigned after forwarding false e-mails falsely saying he was a Muslim and a threat to national security.

Matt Drudge, who publishes the political blog the Drudge Report, said that he was e-mailed a widely circulated picture of Obama in a turban and robe by the Clinton campaign.

“Bringing such pictures that are trying to imply that not only is he a foreigner, he is a Muslim is wrong, because that is not what he is,” scolded Sarah Obama.

However deplorable these tactics might be, i take solace in the fact that DIRTY politics is not only a problem in India but also in such an advanced mature democracy like America. On the other hand, if the educated well fed people of America can be swayed by hateful false propaganda, what hope is their for the integrity of the democratic process in India where two third of the population is illiterate disenfranchised and hungry ?

Truth must be known--- by romesh.sharma on 06 Mar 2008

There are certain things which are deep rooted in human nature and religion/faith is one most important. No law can force the inculcated values and idealogy of any indivisual.People do try and compromise viewing at co-existance but the truth remains the same.In this case of Obama the US citizens have reacted too late and this question of his religion could have been cleared before he was elected Senator and/or given ticket for Presidential candidature. To establish the fact about his religion first of all people have to know about his step-father(Indinesian)who is muslim and then if Obama was circumcised as per muslim rites or not.Which I believe he was later coming back to grand-mother he might have been converted or even without conversion he lived more like christian and didn't/couldn't practice Islam.Boby Jindal also did the same who was born Hindu.I am not speaking anything or have anything against Islam but the US citizens must know the truth about a person to whom they want to entrust so much power.
