"As of now we have not thought of banning the LTTE," Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said on Friday.
"The talk of a ban has been speculative," he added.
Political observers had expected that the ban and the abrogation of the ceasefire pact would come about simultaneously, but the government as of now only chose to pull out of the truce agreement.
"We are looking at several options," Bogollagama said without elaborating, when asked what the government planned to do if it did not want to ban the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) now.
The Foreign Minister recalled President Mahinda Rajapakse's statement on December 26 in which he indicated the government's willingness for talks with the LTTE if it came to the negotiating table after laying down arms.
Sri Lankan Tamils and Sinhalese people are living in harmoney in Sri Lanka. Goto Colombo the capitol city, go anywhere except terrorist controlled areas, you will see how they live peacefully. Tigers are only a power hungry subset of Tamils. They are trying to change the whole issue to an ethnic conflict so they can get the global attention on the hot topic of racism. Such attention only empowers them. By hook or by crook, they controlled the northern parts of Sri Lanka for more than 15 years. Have they solved the problems of Tamil people there? They only built a defence line. They didn't do anything to improve the lives of Tamils in the northern part. I agree the previous governments didnt do it either. However the current government has shown some hope. We all make mistakes. It is time to re-unite. We are Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims. We are people. We need a happy place to live. There are no weapons in the happy places.
