New Delhi, March 21: It was an episode that made him virtually a persona non grata in the Sangh Parivar and within the BJP and that forced him to quit as party president. He even wanted to quit public life and opt for peace in the family.

But three years after the infamous Jinnah episode, senior BJP leader L K Advani says ‘I have no regrets’ on references about the secular nature of Mohammad Ali Jinnah which he quoted from late Sarojini Naidu's speech.

Writing under the chapter ‘I have no regrets’ in his memoirs My Country My Life, Advani recalls the political storm that was generated by his remarks in Karachi during his visit to Pakistan in 2005.

"I could well understand if some ordinary people had felt surprised and even upset, at seeing headlines in TV news bulletins or newspapers that said: 'Advani calls Jinnah secular'.

"But what pained me is that some people thought I had committed a serious ideological heresy even before acquainting themselves with full facts and background information," he writes.

Advani recaptures the turmoil which forced him to resign as president of the BJP. "It would not be an exaggeration to say that I was upset," he notes. His resignation was, however, not accepted by the party's parliamentary board.

He withdrew his resignation but Advani recollects that the turbulence did not end there.

"One day, in the middle of 2005, I was told that I should step down from presidentship of the BJP by the year-end after the conclusion of the party's ongoing silver jubilee celebrations," he says.

The Leader of the Opposition remembers that period as ‘profoundly agonising’ which even forced him to think of ending active political life.

"I was in a dilemma. What should I do ? How should I respond to this situation ? Never in my political life was I enamoured by any post or the power that supposedly came with it," he notes.

"My predicament often made me wonder if it wasn't time for me to embrace the peace and comfort of a quiet family life, which had eluded me for so long. My state of mind was not quite unlike that of the unsure Arjuna on the battlefield," he writes.

He subsequently passed on the baton to Rajnath Singh at the National Council meeting in Mumbai in December.

"I had no regrets and no disappointments. I had the satisfaction of having served my party dutifully and conscientiously -- and the determination to continue to do so in the future," Advani writes.

As for his Pakistan trip, he says ‘a few years down the line there will be people who will think that what Advani did then had strengthened his cause, his party and raised his esteem in the people's eyes’.

He also devotes around 80 pages of his book to the Ayodhya movement which he had spearheaded and says the rise of a Ram temple there is ‘pre-destined’.

Often accused of communally polarising the society, Advani feels that the best way to end the Ayodhya dispute is through negotiations and wants the Muslims to show the goodwill and magnanimity that matches that of Hindus.

"After all, Ram may be a holy religious figure worthy of worship for the Hindus, but he is also a pre-eminent symbol of India's cultural heritage which belongs to the Hindus and Muslims alike," he says.

Most of our politicians are nitwits starting from Gandhi by n.krishna on 24 Mar 2008

After 1857 in which many Britishers and all Christians in Delhi were killed, the British wanted to take full revenge on the muslims. During the next ten years, British have eliminated some ten million Indians, mostly muslims. To teach a permanent lesson to the muslims, Jinnah was recruited trained and pampered by the British. Jinnah was sitting in the same office of a British official, in Bombay. Jinnah was never arrested or jailed. Using the Islamic religion, the idiotic muslims were supplied with weapons by the British. The muslims started killing Hindus, in 1946 in what is called direct action and this resulted in the partition. Britain using Jinnah shifted the idiotic muslims from the fertile gangetic plains to the hilly Himalayan, earthquake prone region. Nehru was pampered by the British and is a traitor, who in return he gave away Subhash Chandra Bose to the British. Most of our politicians are nitwits starting from Gandhi, who never understood what is written in Koran, was reading it in temples while the muslims butchered Hindus in 1946. Gandhis Khilafat movement resulted in the slaughter, rape and conversion of Hindus in Kerala by the muslim terrorists in 1921.

Jinnah the perfect British spy by n.krishna on 24 Mar 2008

Like Islam the public is not discussing the most successful British spy Mohd Ali Jinnah. After researching Secret and confidential documents at the India Office ibrary, London I can say that Jinnah pork eating, drinking pedophile incestuous muslim was recruited and was accompanied by a British agent in the ship to England. Britain has promoted Jinnah and Nehru for the struggle for independence. Both Nehru and Jinnah were born muslims. Jinnah’s parents were Hindus but father was converted to Islam before Jinnah was born. Jinnah’s first wife was also a Hindu. Nehru’s grand father was a muslim, but assumed a Hindu name to escape the British soldiers in Delhi. Both of them served the British interest well. Jinnah was a pedophile and that was how he hooked his second child wife Ruttie. Ruttie deserted Jinnah soon after marriage on witnessing the incest between Jinnah and his younger sister. Ruttie’s letters thus were never released. It was an irony of history that Jinnah was tortured and killed by Pakistanis who understood his real role as one who damaged the cause of Islam for ever. Finally Jinnah’s sister was also horribly killed by the Pak government

SECULAR CREDENTIAL BEGINS AT HOME . by A.Mahadevan on 22 Mar 2008

Paying flattering respect to an archenemy of the country is an insult to the honour country and to the ordinary citizens who are all uncommon common citizens who uphold the prestige of the country with high esteem for its noble values.Jinnah was never a secular man and if he is secular why he insisted to conduct the marriage and burial ceremonies of his Parsee wife according to Islamic rites? He visited Egypt, Turkey, aga khan and other very sinister personalities to trump up support for the creation of Pakistan. Is he (Jinnah) really secular, Mr. L K? Jinnah was a very deceitful man and with an evil genius for destruction.

Please don't blame all on Advaniji... by Raju on 22 Mar 2008

Come on man, why in the wolrd you blame Jinha for failure of congress leadership? When Jinha talk of Civil War, why Mahatma Gandhi did not have pair of @@@@ to tell him "Mr. Jinha I am man of non violence but if you want civil war so be it". The congress leadership was more on self serving agenda and were influencing the congress members. Gandhi wanted to leave as man of non violence...resulted in division of country with leaving Hindus with 160 million Mulsim problem today, Nehru wanted to become world citizen where he left the country with Kashmir problem and humiliating defeat of at hand of China in 1962. It was congressmen Nehru who kept India as close country making one of largest corrupt nation.....when country economy was opened it is congress who want to take all credit for!

LK Adani's words can not be taken seriously by P.P. TALWAR on 22 Mar 2008

LK advani's sole aim is to become next Prime Minister of India. Therefore, making confusing statements is his old habit of shielding his own poliical failings. His words of praise for Jinnah at his mazar in Pakistan has not won him any admiration or recognition.

Advani by drmadhani on 21 Mar 2008

Advani has islam-hammer dementia. Sindh is Bharat and Karachi was made by Sindhis. Why Southern Sindh was at time of partision not given to Hindu Sindhis? Today it is not too late and Advani should spend rest of his days to secularise Southern Sindh. Can Advani do this?

Advaniji is right by Raju on 21 Mar 2008

Advaniji is right in his asseement of Jinha which he reffered from the writtings of Sarojini Naidu. Even in Ganshi Movie Jinha stated such intentions at celebration of Pakistan being. It was congress leadershiip who gave Jinha feeling that he being kept in sideline by Nehru's ambitions to become PM of free India. It is blood line of Nehru family.....Motilal threatened Gandhi of starting new party, Indira Ganshi start new party called Congress (I) which now claims ilegimately the Name Indian National congress as we all know there is no congress today which played roll in freedom struggle.Thought of the day - If Nehru - Gandhis were so popular why non of them ever fight elections from the places they actually live? They always selected constituencies which ecconomically and socially backward, bribe the people and get elcted! The distruction of Babri Dhacho was not on the wish list of BJP leadership, as it was confirmed by Atalji also.
