Hence, there may be some relief for consumers but not before May. Moreover, a unit of Lehra Mohabbat has also become operational, which will generate around 250 mw of power.
At present, four-hour power cuts are being imposed on domestic consumers while industrial consumers get compulsory one-day weekly off. At times, the duration of the power cuts extends up to five hours, depending upon the availability of power.
According to the PSEB system operation cell, hydel power generation has hit a new-low these days but it will increase in May when snow starts melting. Further, the board will buy power from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and a few private companies.
“Power cuts will ease a bit but that does not mean there will be no power cuts,” said a PSEB official on the condition of anonymity.
However, the consumers are still not ready to believe the PSEB officials because the paddy-sowing season will start from the first week of June and hence the eight-hour dedicated power supply will go to the farm sector. This will again cause power shortage for urban consumers. “I do not think that power situation will ease from May onwards. Rather it may further deteriorate because temperature will rise. Moreover in pre-summer, we will get 4 to 5 hour power cuts. What will happen when ACs will run apart from regular power supply to farmers,” said Amarjit Singh, a resident of Karnail Singh Nagar.
At the moment, the gap between demand and supply is about 175 lakh units.
