No respite: Jam-ming still on, Gurgaon expressway no music to commuter ears

Gurgaon, February 18 Despite the efforts being put in to ease the mess at the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway, the toll plaza continues to be a nightmare during office hours. While DS Constructions promised on Friday that the waiting period at the plaza will be brought down to 10 minutes, on Monday most commuters waited for over 15 minutes to cross the plaza.

“I have been idling here for almost 20 minutes. The chaos ruins the whole pleasure of the expressway driving,” said Namita Kapur, resident of Gautam Nagar, who works with a PR firm at Gurgaon. She also added that many of the problems were due to drivers not sticking to their lanes.

It is a similar problem for Gurgaon residents driving to Delhi. Suneet Singh (35), said, “I work in Gulmohar Park and the expressway is the fastest route to my office. But with the jams at the toll plaza, I have been seriously contemplating using the Gurgaon-Mehrauli road despite the fact that I might have to travel a few kilometres extra.”

Physical barricades have been extended by 500 meters on both side of the plaza to segregate the vehicles. DS Constructions, builders of the expressway, also reduced the concession rates of the passes on Friday and started new schemes to encourage commuters to opt for smart tags.

But when Newsline approached the company on Monday for a plausible explanation for the continuing traffic jam, the company spokesperson said, “The outcome of the new schemes will be assessed after a week. It would be premature and misleading to speculate on the outcome ahead of this.”

DS Constructions wants to convert a majority to smart-tag vehicles. The Rs 500 deposit has been done away with to attract motorists and if commuters opt for tags by February 25, they can avail a 50 per cent discount on the rates. The spokesperson said, “The firm will ensure that the waiting time for cash users will be 10 minutes in the next 12 weeks by intensely regulating the traffic locally.”
