Sources in the state election office here said that a fax message from the EC landed late on Monday evening, informing it of the refusal to grant further extension to the officer who had slapped POTA against the accused on the basis of a statement of one of the accused, Bin Yamin. But the charges were recently withdrawn by the Gujarat High Court, saying that POTA was not applicable to them as there was no evidence of any conspiracy.
The recommendations were sent to EC owing to the Model Code of Conduct coming into force with the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls. This was the fifth extension the state government wanted to give to Parmar after his retirement in August 2004. Although Parmar’s extension had expired on March 31, he reportedly continued to attend office in Vadodara till April 4.
His seniors also took no objection to his attending office beyond March 31. Sources in the Home Department said that action could be initiated against Parmar’s seniors for that.
Meanwhile, Parmar is reported to have collected reimbursements of all his dues, including travel expenditure to Ahmedabad in connection with POTA case hearings in the High Court recently.
After EC’s no to his extension, he also surrendered his official cellphone. He was not available to comment on the issue.
