New Delhi Taking strong note of the alleged rape of a girl in Noida, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has asked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to ensure the safety of women in the state, specially the suburbs adjoining the capital.

In a letter to Mayawati, NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas has said being a woman, the UP CM was in a better position to understand the problems being faced by women in her state and thus to solve them.

Observing that the crime against women scene in Uttar Pradesh was deteriorating day by day, Vyas said at a press conference in New Delhi that it was specially a problem in areas adjoining the capital like Ghaziabad and Noida.

An analysis by NCW of the nature of crime of the complaints shows that the largest number of rape cases were registered in Uttar Pradesh at 429 followed by Rajasthan at 107, Delhi at 72 and Haryana at 59.

The rape cases in Uttar Pradesh have also shown an increase of 30 per cent during 2007 as against 2003.

The commission has formed a two-member team to enquire into the incident which visited the scene of crime on Wednesday and met senior police officers investigating the case.

A 24-year old MBA student was allegedly gangraped by a group of five young men near a mall in sector 39 in Noida earlier this week.

Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Choudhry had on Wednesday hit out at Mayawati for not being able to ensure safety of women in her state.

Noida is a difficult place to live in by Vinod Shukla on 10 Jan 2009

If you’ve lived in Noida for a little while, you’ll be well aware of the situation here. Some of the young village residents believe they are above the law and because they’ve got lots of friends and political connections they can do anything. Every day some citizen is beaten up or brutalized in Noida by them, and the police can do nothing. This case has been picked up because media highlighted it. But the political goondas like Amar singh are already rushing to save the guilty. I wonder if Amar Singh has any respect for women? And on the sidelines I can see the village parents and friends of the guilty uniting in threatening the complainant and putting pressure on her using every means. These guys truly feel the law is their slave and they are the masters.God save Noida.

Nodia gang sex by Nazar on 08 Jan 2009

This is to happen and will increase in future. We are responsible, our culture being diluted. People are watching prone films in families and implementation of sex education in early stage will help it more. God knows better what to happen....... I only say God please help us.

NCW by Niranjan on 08 Jan 2009

NCW should have enclosed a cheque of few lakhs for her birthday to get her interested. Nothing other than her statues and birthdays interests her. That is why her MLAs are raping, litererally and figuratively the populace of the state.

YOU CASTEIST ARE MORE BAD THAN RACIST by Prashant on 08 Jan 2009

Mr Niranjan, Delhi figures bigger in Rapes than UP ...So ...what is Sheela Dixit doing in Delhi ... You blame Mayawati ...what are the statues of Rajiv Gandhi and Nehru doing in our country ...you do not have problem against them ...IDIOTS ... Just because you disagree with me is no reason to use bad language or be nasty. Your language shows your upbringing and your casteism. Also, there are no 'local sabha'elections.

that is why you have not devoloped. even if i say hello, it sounds like a bad word. by incometax payer on 08 Jan 2009

"Statues before or after death" by Martin on 08 Jan 2009

Dear Mr. Prashanth your two comments one related to gang sex and the other related to statues appear to be out of place. Statues are put up by the people after the person has died. That is to commemorate their deeds and contribution to society. People of India have put up statues of Dr. Ambedkar. No body doubts the sincerity. Whereas when a leader puts up his/her own statues (For example Saddam Hussein, Mayawati) it reflects a different mentality.

Thank you, Mr. Martin, for puting my thoughts in words. A statue inaugurated by a live person is the lowest of all politics. Caste has nothing to do with it.

safety!?? by observer on 08 Jan 2009

it is seen that the states wich have the customs of "ghunghat" for the so called honour, respect and protection are the ones which are most prone to crimes againts them...and my god!! the cm itself is a punjabi clad, boycut, un-ghunghted, unmarried girl!! how is she going to relate to the agony and plight of the women in these states!!!

Mayawati behen and her statues by Martin on 08 Jan 2009

Mayawati behen is only interested in her statues and wearing taj as shown in photographs. We wonder whether she has any time for this. She probably would be checking what is the caste of the girl who has been raped. In my opinion all the perpetrators who are caught in a crime of rape should be castrated because that is what they deseve.
