Patiala, March 13 With majority of its roads plunging into complete darkness after the sunset, residents are now paying the price for the Patiala Municipal Corporation’s neglect with their lives. While the corporation has been promising to replace the non-functional streetlights for the past many years, nothing substantial has been done in the regard till date.

Driving on various city roads has become a nightmare for residents. The section of the highway passing through the city has claimed many lives in the past besides several accidents.

“The road from Thapar College to Leela Bhawan market is dangerous due to non-functional streetlights in the area. This has resulted into many accidents on this road,” said Rahul Sharma, who runs a shop near 22 no. market.

The problem areas also include Nabha Road, 22 no flyover, Sirhind Road, Stadium Road, Baradari, Mall Road and various other roads in the city where traffic is heavy during evening time.

Unlit roads also create a law and order problem. “Streetlights are important factor that determine the safety of a passage. Anti-social elements pounce upon commuters taking the advantage of the darkness,” said senior police officials.

Devinder Singh, a resident of Patiala said, “I have shifted to the city about a month ago and I found the city roads in pathetic condition. Driving through city roads after the sunset is dangerous.”

When contacted, Patiala Deputy Mayor Anil Bajaj said that the area under the Patiala Municipal Corporation was well lit while many other roads fall under the Public Works Department (PWD) and they have been apprised about the problem. “PWD should take the onus to replace the non-functional streetlights on its shoulders and we will definitely improve the condition of roads falling under us,” Bajaj told Newsline.
