Not fatigue, Sehwag's absence badly hurt India: Ganguly

London Former captain Sourav Ganguly has rejected coach Gary Kirsten's claim that fatigue was a reason behind India's early ouster from the Twenty20 World Cup and said Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men missed Virender Sehwag badly in the tournament. While Kirsten had blamed an overdose of cricket and Indian Premier League as the cause for the World Cup fiasco, India skipper Dhoni continued to differ with his coach, saying the team's early exit has nothing to do with 'fatigue factor'.

Ganguly bluntly disagreed with Kirsten on the cause of the debacle and said for a young team like India, fatigue can't be an excuse. "I don't agree with this because they are young boys. They are just 22, 23 years old and have just started their career. I know they have played a lot of cricket but not all of them. "Probably people like Dhoni, Yuvraj (Singh), Harbhajan (Singh) and Zaheer (Khan) have because they are part of consistent Test team and has done a lot of traveling on the road," he said. "This is the age to play, they are 25, 26. Even if you are fatigued, you have to find ways out to get yourself up and going," he added.

Ganguly felt Sehwag's absence made a major difference in realising the fortune of the team in the biennial event. "Sehwag makes a major difference in the team. Rohit (Sharma) was opening the batting for the first time but he didn't do well in the last three matches. "Sehwag, Sachin (Tendulkar), and Gambhir (Gautam) are key part of the Indian team in the shorter format of the game.

With those two (Sehwag and Tendulkar) missing, obviously there was a bit of weakness," the former India skipper said. Ganguly, however, refused to draw any adverse conclusion from the World Cup debacle and feels the real test for India is five-day game and One-day Internationals, not Twenty20. "These things happen in sport.

Just like any Indian supporter you feel bad, but this team has done well in the past one, one-and-a-half year. This tournament has been a bit of poor show but that happens in sport," Ganguly said. "I think we should not be swayed too much up and down with it because the real Test for our cricketer is Tests and 50 over game. India has done well in Test in the recent past," he said.

T 20 Debacle by srinivas janardhan on 23 Jun 2009

It is fact that the players were after sponsorship market and IPL which is money spinner and therefore were out of focus and forgot the fundamentals.Added to this was injury factor which was brushed under carpet. It is a miatake to have made Dhony captain to 3 vertions of game which ar poles apart.Dhony becme a sheetanchor and grafter which is only in test matches. His gambling instincts backfired like sending Jadeja up the order when he is only abowler and depending on Yuvraj as astike bowler was wrong.Yuvraj sucseeded in IPL and failed in world chapionship.Ishant Sherma is OK in longer vertion and praveen and RP are good in T 20 but werenotproperly utilised. It was a big mistake to have left out ojah and taken jadeja which proved ditrimental. The team was not interested in practice session as they wre jaded after IPL.It is known fact that Indian batsman are wanting in negotiating risig delivery and the ones aimed at the ribcage. This can be corrected with tennis ball and bowling machine.

re:IPL Debacle by Rama Anne on 22 Jun 2009

I agree with gangulay ,it is not just fatigue, remember in IPL all nationalities and players are involved ...the batsmen failed and not including Sachin or Shehwag is a big mistake ..not to disturb wininng combination does not make sense

look who is talking by arjun on 21 Jun 2009

Ganguly - Please shut up. It makes sense if this is coming from someone credible.

Backbone by Thomas Sebastian on 22 Jun 2009

Arjun, u must be a child as u don't know Gangulys contribution to indian cricket. As he made the team as it is today. He gave a backbone to the indian cricket. Dhoni and all just inherited his success and was enjoying till now. U wait and see Dhoni's real test is just about to start. I don't like some one acting artificially cool like dhoni. Be greatfull to some one who really made a team like sheeps into roaring lions.

Ganguly's credibility by Pankaj on 22 Jun 2009

And why do you question Ganguly's credibility? What makes you think he is not credible enough?

Fitness of Indian Team by Ashok Chhibbar on 20 Jun 2009

Its amazing how Ganguly and BCCI keep rejecting the fatigue aspect brought out by Gary Kirsten, and the injury report by the team Physio. The Captain says the team was injury ridden but the same team is off to West Indies. No wonder we dont (or cant) perform because the injuries keep haunting us.

Ganguly's opinion by Sridhar on 20 Jun 2009

I tend to agree with Ganguly's observation. One person's absence cannot make a difference and should not. In the England match,Dhoni played for 8 overs and we lost by 3 runs. In the match against South Africa, we lost despite restricting South Africa to 130. While bowling has been above par, why is batting sluggish? It is the "Burn out" caused due to IPL or the players do not have the 'FIGHTING SPIRIT". It is a shame India could not get into semis despite good talents.

NO FATIGUE AS CAUSE OF T20 FAILURE by uma shankar vajpeyi on 19 Jun 2009

I HAD WRITTEN AN EMAIL TO KRIS SRIKANTH AT THE BCCI THAT THEY SHOULD INCLUDE TENDULKAR BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN ON TIURS TO ENGLAND SINCE TH AGE OF 15.AND HAS THE EXPERIENCE OF ENGLISH CONDITIONS ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN THE FIRST PART OF THE CRIKET SEASON.......IF THAT HAD BEEN DONE SEHAWGS ABSENCE WOULD HAVE PUSHED TENDULKAR ON TO THE ARENA...LET THE SELECTORS PLAY WITH OUR BOYS THEY DO NOT USE THEIR EXPERIENCE...

Tendulkar by Pankaj on 22 Jun 2009

I do agree with you. Tendulkar's love for the game is unquestionable. He is sillting on multi million dollar deals and investments. Yet, the guy was in England watching all the games. He loves the game, whether is fails or succeeds. Question I asked was - If Tendular was in the stadium watching the game, why didnt BCCI and Dhoni reached out to him. I know we need to look ahead but there are situational needs when you need to look back as well.

Hiding Injuries. by Sridhar on 18 Jun 2009

Either some players were not disclosing their injuries or the BCCI took risk and selected them to play. For example. we all know about Sewhag's should injury, when did Suresh Raina injure is finger. Was it during IPL or after going to UK. Is it why he failed to play well?

Team Work by Prakash S Dhami on 18 Jun 2009

Indians did not click as a team ,the spirit was found missing. Other teams peaked at the right time. Pak and WI are examples of good team work. Indian team had many star individuals but was not a star TEAM

no zeal by prashanth on 19 Jun 2009

well said Prakash. i totally agree with you. ALL the players GAVE what they had to in the IPL. BCCI should realize that no matter howmuch we fans appreciate IPL, we ultimately give importance to matches like India- Pakistan. There should have been a substantial amount of GAP between these two tournaments. Or they should look at canceling IPL season during years the worldcup is scheduled. (highly impossible though, who doesn't want money)

Team India by Bean on 18 Jun 2009

I think everything was bad. Such a lousy selection of T shirt colour. They all looked shabby. They made a mess of Shewags exit. I think the leaders of team India messed up from A to Z

Sourav on Sehwag's absence causing India lose by R Sharma on 18 Jun 2009

Sourav is absolutely wrong. Had Dhoni scored 11 off few balls less than 23, we would have been in the semis! And, truer than that is the truth that other players from 01-11 are equally responsible as Sehwag could be expected to have been.

sehwag by pawan kumar on 18 Jun 2009

agreed. sehwag presence would have made much big difference. losing three games in a row was too much

Fatigue by Jay on 18 Jun 2009

Ganguly is wrong - fatigue must be occured. Otherwise why did we have all these injuries - the poor performances cannot be down to 1 player (Sehwag). So what Ganguly is trying to say is that Sehwag would have beaten the likes of England, South Africa on his own?I hope the BCCI have learnt a good lesson that "rest" is crucical in all sports. It is upto the BCCI to dictate the rest needed, as players will not say they want a rest as they might lose their place or miss out on IPL money.

hi by ksakthivel on 18 Jun 2009

shewag to west indias ond mach player shewag played to west indias mach

Cricket by Sridhar on 18 Jun 2009

Is India cricket then, a one man show always? Be it Tendulkar, Be it Gavaskar or Kapil Dev? Cricket is a team game and there is no excuse in saying the team missed Shewag
