New Delhi Insisting that all options are open on dealing with terrorism emanating from Pakistan, government on Sunday said nobody should think that India is ‘helpless’ and asserted that the menace would be confronted with ‘courage and fortitude’.

Speaking at a conclave of Congress district and block level office-bearers here, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee cautioned against linking the problem of terrorism to any religion.

"Perpetrators of (Mumbai) terror attacks must be punished. Nobody should think that this country is helpless and cannot tackle the situation arising out of terrorism," Mukherjee said.

"I repeat all options are open," he added at the conclave which was attended by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

In a veiled attack on the opposition parties which have accused the Congress-led government of soft-pedalling terrorism for minority appeasement, he said, "I must utter a word of caution, if not warning, for those elements which try to misrepresent this issue.... (who say) that this act concerns a particular religion."

He asserted that terrorism would be fought with "courage and fortitude".

Demanding that Pakistan should fulfill its international commitments to fight terror, Mukherjee said, "We are asking the country from where terrorists had come to fulfill all their commitments which they, as a state, are obliged to do, and not shirk the responsibility."

He said Pakistan was committed to the UN resolution of not allowing use of its land for terrorist activity.

"They (Pakistan) have to fulfill their commitment. Perpetrators of terror attacks must be brought to justice," he said. He warned Pakistan not to divert attention from the issue.

The External Affairs Minister said terrorism had no religion, no borders and no respect for any nation.

This itself shows helpessness by D.K.Barooah on 09 Feb 2009

Talking too much is an indication of helplessness, why doesn't the PM in waiting just do what he is expected to--wait.

Not Helpless by Amy on 09 Feb 2009

Words, words and words. When will be an action? How long will Pranab fool us?

Not helpless, will fight terror with courage: Pranab by ravi on 09 Feb 2009

The practice of a daily dose of such useless hot air from our Govt is to be deprecated. Who do they think they are trying to convince? This bandying of brave words is the only 'action' from the Congress stable. Pity we fools have to vote these greats again and again.

Barking dogs seldom bite by Amit on 09 Feb 2009

Pranab Mukherji and the whole Congress Govt. reminds strongly of the saying "Barking dogs seldom bite. Yes, all options are open for taking action and the impotent Govt. will make sure that they remain open forever by not taking any action. I think, people in India rightfully deserve this kind of Govt. Immediately after tha 26/11 attach, they voted on the basis of cast and religion and gave overhelming majority to the Govt.

Sickening Pranab by Hero Vaz on 09 Feb 2009

Pranab is the most sickening character. "All options are open", he keeps repeating without using even one. Why is he so anxious to make a fool of himself? Already, the Pakis have made a monkey of India when you hear their statements and see the way they have handled the Mumbai attacks case.

HELPLESS. by Vinod Dawda on 09 Feb 2009

The showing so far has been helpless. How long will it take to have a policy that we can execute without whining. For all its stupidity Pakistan has a consistently crazy policy that it carries out.

India , terrorists , helpless , courage ? by c.kannan on 08 Feb 2009

Its time politicians in India , had courgage to fix its loopholed system, prevented dynastic succession ,undo mixing religion and caste with politics , and trimmed the constitution of its fat.Certainly managing of PSU plants , railways etc should no more be governments business , but national security , fundamental rights , law and order should defenitely be.Things will be automatically be taken care off. Just ensure that election commission , courts , police, intelligence and the army are able to do their jobs , professionally without any interference and adequately monitored and rewarded for performance. If the indian response to terrorism results only in emotional outburts , society in India can reach a stage where one may not be able to distingush between life and death, security and chaos.

Courrage and Fortitude - really by Jas on 08 Feb 2009

Pranab asserted that the menace would be confronted with ‘courage and fortitude’. Why have not you been doing that Mr. Minister? Rhetoric aside, you are a bunch of spineless and incompetent politicians who are incapable of taking any decisive action against Muslim or Hindu Terrorists alike. All you are interested in is Hindu and Muslim votes. Interest of the nation is foreign concept to you.

A good actor to stay in limelight for post of PM? by gary on 08 Feb 2009

Looks more interested to project himself as a PM candidate instead of working silently and with some aim? Why you need to explain the same thing everyday, Mr pranav Mukrjee?

Can India be one country without liguistic divide? by Rajan on 08 Feb 2009

Can Modi, Yeduverrappa and Advani and BJP keep the country together in the face of bickering Chief Ministers that keep fighting each other on linguistic basis?

DEALING WITH PAKISTAN by balu on 08 Feb 2009

Let Pranab show at least a single action rather than just talking.Either Pranab or Congress made all Indians Slave. India is not supreme in Air, Naval or Army. During Kargil War we have seen how our Army struggled. CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, money to Congress this is what the Congress knows. Despite having all resources, we are suffering, struggling without a strong, able and corruption less leaders

Pranabs terror spech by Siva Kumar on 08 Feb 2009

How many more years do you require for your courage and fortitude to change in to action.Or how many bombing or more innocents are to be killed for it.Congress is hell bent in minority appeasement and is lead by cowards. If it was any other country/Rulers they would have responded sternly for the crimes commited on their people.Your veiled threat that Hindus are Terrorists is also a game plan of appeasement. The whole thing this Gov. has done is repeatedly telling that all options are open/we will not permit this to happen again.Your are helpless and only a paper tiger.

What a conviction about.... by Indian on 08 Feb 2009

What a conviction that Indians are idiots.. If Pranab really thinks we are not fools, he should not have said the same old thing "all options are open" for a 100th time.. Who is he fooling? We, Indian people, also have the option of throwing out you and your Congress appeasers for allowing terror cells to multiply all over the country.. by repealing POTA, by sending a message to all potential terrorists that nothing will happen to them by protecting Afza... Enough is enough...Get lost...

ELECTION GIMMICK by S Thulasidharan on 08 Feb 2009

It is quite disheartening to see that the same sentence that "All options are open" being repeated since last 3 months without any justice being done for the lives lost in this attack. This is nothing but pure gimmick to gather vote for the coming general election as there is no option available with the Government rather than repeating this sentence to the people of India.
