Panchkula, March 4 After ultra-modern shopping malls, it’s now time for Panchkula residents to experience a mall of a different kind. An agro mall is slated to come up soon in Sector 20, Panchkula, at an estimated cost of around Rs 30 crore.

The construction of the four-storey fully air-conditioned mall will be taken up by the Haryana Agriculture Marketing Board and will have escalators, food courts and basement parking facility.

“Agro mall is a new concept not only in Haryana but for the entire region. We believe that it was the need of the hour to create a platform for sellers, and making vegetable shopping an enjoyable experience for buyers. The mall will be like any other shopping mall, but unlike other malls, this one will have retail outlets of fresh fruits and vegetables. Besides, it will be environment- friendly, fully air-conditioned with ample parking facility, escalators, 24-hour power back-up and a roof-top restaurant ,” said the chief administrator of Haryana Agriculture Marketing Board, Ram Niwas.

“The mall will be constructed on a covered area of 3 lakh square feet near the existing fruit and vegetable market in Sector 20 and will have two basement-level parking. “The ground floor will have around 90 shops of fruits, vegetables and other allied products, while the second and third floors will be fully dedicated to big retail companies. As for the fourth floor, it will be reserved for various agro-based financial institutions,” added Niwas. It also added that the top floor would be used for a food court.

Niwas stated that similar agro malls have also been sanctioned for other districts such as Karnal, Panipat, Faridabad and Rohtak. “While the construction work has already started, work in other districts would also start soon. The construction of the mall will be completed in Panchkula in a year’s time,” added Niwas.

On the condition of anonymity, another official of the board said, “At present, there is no retail section for fruits and vegetables. It was after the delegates visited different countries such as Italy, Spain, France and England that the idea was mooted. Unlike traditional markets like that of Sector 26 in Chandigarh, the mall will have facilities like washing, grading, packing, cold storage facility and modern garbage disposal system.”
