washington, February 28: The Tata Group has extended its philanthropic efforts to the United States, where it is bidding to acquire Ford’s Landrover and Jaguar automobile brands, to distribute 65,000 new books to children in need.

Officials of Tata Group North America distributed the first batch of books to second grade students from Dodge Park Elementary School in Landover, Maryland as part of First Book’s mission to provide new books to disadvantaged children.

The six Tata Group companies had in 2007 extended support to First Book, an award-winning non-profit organisation.

The combined support of Tata Sons, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Interactive Systems, Eight O’Clock Coffee, Tata Communications and Corus, will allow First Book to distribute 65,000 new books, valued at USD260,000, to programmes serving children in need throughout the United States, the company said in a release.

“The Tata Group has a long heritage of focusing on education in the communities in which it operates. We believe that doing good is doing good business and this is a good example of how we use our resources constructively to invest in future generations,” said David Good, chief representative, The Tata Group North America.

Tata Interactive Systems also helped First Book design a new online network that will enable it to communicate more effectively with its 50,000 partners and donors. Kyle Zimmer, president of First Book, thanked the company for its support.

“As part of the Tata Group, TCS continues to carry on the tradition and values of giving back to the communities in which we operate,” said Surya Kant, President of TCS NA.

“We are proud to be doing our part to ensure that the youth of America are getting the knowledge they need to succeed in the world of tomorrow."

This is ridiculous move by the Tatas! They need to start caring for their employees first before they can actually do any philanthropic activites.

Give back to community- show by example by Deepak on 29 Feb 2008

TATA is doing a right thing what a good company will do. It is giving back to the community where it made money following a culture of giving in the country they do business. I hope the same message is followed in India too by TATA and others.A good corporation makes a country and develops its people.

True to the Tradition , Ratanji Tata is doing a great job in USA too. Long live the Tata's. God Bless them. They made not only India proud but the Parsi Community too.

TATA by Vimal on 29 Feb 2008

This Charity was done to get Jaguar and Land rover. Whatever they spend, they will also get tax break. Moreover they collect $100.00 from each TCS employee as charity thru which they make $1 million in USA alone. So net result is publicity and profit. TATA ethics can be known from TCS. Surya Kant is a idiot. I know him personally as I am a TCS employee

What next, help the poor in Sweden?? by Dileep on 29 Feb 2008

I am sure the next mission for the Tatas will be to alleviate poverty and help the downtrodden in Switzerland, Sweden, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Singapore. France and Iran may need some help too!

Tata's are not known for hyporcrisy, but this one?? by Jolly on 29 Feb 2008

Tatas can do well to spend some more money on their employees and executives in India (who are brilliant but paid much less than the competitors). Also charity begins at home. Why not Tatas do something about the poverty and education needs of the Indian children? May be it is a much larger task, and is best done by foreigners (like Mother Therea and Steve Waugh?)

TATA by Tamil Arasan on 29 Feb 2008

Jolly what you know about TATA, it is the biggest company in India but still their promoters not own more then 10% share of the company, rest 90% share goes to TATA charity, TATA cancer hospital is the first of its kind in India, one can give many such examples. What ever the TATA charity is doing is with out any motive they are purely based on charity purpose, bit unlike Theresa she did all the things to convert the poor Hindus to Christianity in the name of charity....which can not be called charity...

Dear SuryaKant,First go ahead and pay Nandigram victims whom your company and the Commy regime expolited. Then pay a decent salary to all the disgruntled employees of TCS in North America who work in TCS Sweatshops. And then talk about philanthrophy.Shame on your organization. An ex-employee of TCS.
