On Monday, state government employees owing allegiance to the Opposition parties organised a rally, during which Trinamool MP Mukul Roy read out a message sent by Banerjee. It said, “If the government does not take any action against the employees, I will lead an agitation at the Writers’ Buildings.” The last time Banerjee had sat for a dharna inside the Writers’ Buildings in front of then chief minister Jyoti Basu’s chamber was in 1993.
While the Kolkata police has lodged FIRs against four employees of the Writers’ Buildings, who were involved in the violent demonstration, the state government has also sent show-cause notices to eight employees, including those four.
To inculcate discipline among employees of the Writers’ Buildings, the state government issued a circular on Monday making attendance at 10 am mandatory.
Home Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti said the government would take disciplinary action against the employees if their responses were not satisfactory. He also admitted that the employees lacked discipline.
As the deadline for submitting the replies expired on Monday, the employees sought more time to file their responses. “We have requested the state government for an extension of 10 days,” said Sanket Chakrabarti, Writers Building unit secretary of state government employees federation (unified).
