Asim Munna, a local political activist told The Indian Express that the camp was organised by the Blind Eye Relief Society at the government’s community health centre.

“Those so-called doctors, also showed us an authority letter issued by the health directorate, Lucknow, for organising the eye camp here,” he said.

The locals said the organisers charged Rs 2,000 from every patient for conducting the operation and had told them that their society was “giving the subsidy of about six thousand per patient.”

“A doctor, who was acting as the in-charge of that eye camp, had told that the receipts of charged amount would be sent by registered post along with the certificates,” said Munna.

The same group later conducted another eye camp at Mawai block where over forty patients got their eyes operated.

“We had only four thousand rupees out which my husband paid about two thousand in the eye camp. Now both my eyes and money have gone,” said Shahjahan Begum, 65, who before being operated was able to see in the daylight only, but after the operation she has become completely blind.

This is not the story of few eye camps where medical negligence has left several patients blind.

In the past couple of months, several eye camps were held in different districts of the state and they are all replete with such instances. With each passing days fresh cases are coming to light.
