Kolkata, March 11 The lone MLA of the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), Santa Chettri, today demanded statehood for Darjeeling and urged the government to bring in a resolution in the state Assembly for facilitating it.

Chettri raised the demand in the state Assembly and reiterated that her party would not settle for anything less than the statehood for Darjeeling. She said that the people in the hills don’t want the existing Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC), but ‘Gorkhaland’, a state, instead.

Meanwhile, Pranay Rai, MLA from Darjeeling constituency, and Gaulan Lepcha, MLA from Kalimpong on Tuesday met principal secretary to the Chief Minister at the Writers’ Buildings and submitted a memorandum. Till last month, they represented GNLF and are now giving an “unconditional support” to its rival in the state — the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha being led by Bimal Gurung

Rai, too, reiterated the demand for Gorkhaland. He said that as a matter of principle, the two MLAs are not supporting another election to the DGHC. With GNLF chief Subash Ghisingh having resigned from the DGHC chief’s post, the two factions now share the same agenda. Rai claimed that the demand for Gorkhaland is being supported by all political parties active in Darjeeling. “We will also seek support on the issue from other regional movements,” Rai said.

Sougata Roy, Trinamool MLA, said that the demand for formation of any state can be raised omly in the Lok Sabha.

Bloc terms Dinhata firing ‘shameful’
The Forward Bloc, which has been protesting against its own Left Front government, for the February 5 Dinhata firing on Tuesday once again condemned the incident and demanded action against those responsible for it.
Replying to the Governor’s address, Doli Roy, Bloc MLA, said it is shameful that such an incident took place during the Left Front’s rule.
Talking to the media, later, Roy said that all those killed were shot on the upper part of their body and added that the names of deceased should have been mentioned in the obituary reference made in the House last week.
