New Delhi Nuclear installations across the country have been put on high alert as it has been found that David Headley, a US citizen arrested by FBI on terror charges, had visited some states having atomic installations.

Sources in the Home Ministry said on Monday that all the state governments having nuclear plants have been asked to step up patrolling and vigil around the facilities as a precautionary measures.

They said that Headley, accused of plotting terror attacks in India on behalf of Pakistan-based LeT, had visited Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh - all having crucial nuclear installations - raising suspicion that nuclear facilities could be on the radar of the terrorists.

"The step is precautionary in nature. The states have been asked to increase the vigil and patrolling to thwart any sabotage attempt aimed at these vital facilities," a Home Ministry official said.

There are six major nuclear energy plants operational in the country- Narora in Uttar Pardesh, Kaiga in Karnataka, Tarapur in Maharashtra, Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, Kakrapar in Gujarat and Kota in Rajasthan, besides several other research and development centres like Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Trombay. Nuclear installations put on high alert by Abdulmajeed Khan Advocate on 16 Nov 2009

Dear Sir, This is very difficult for any terrorist group or unauthorised person to reach within the sorrounding area of 2 miles of any nuclear plant. So all these national assets are in all nuclear states within their control. Only the authorised code permits to reach at target.nuclear installations always remains alert .No sleep or slip word is existing in these red zone areas.

Radical Changes in the Democratic Set Up by Bharat on 16 Nov 2009

Certain radical changes are essential in India's democratic set up to ensure safety of our strategic assets, although such measures may not be prevalent in other democratic countries. Let us think ourselves. A policeman with a stick in his hand cannot protect establishments like BARC, ISRO, DRDO etc. India must keep the Home Ministry away from this task as this ministry has frequently and amply proved their inability to undertake such tasks. Indian Parliament, Supreme Court, State Secretariats, High Courts, Reserve Bank of India, RAPP, TAPP, MAPP, BARC, ISRO etc. etc. must fall under Military Protection with absolute authority to exercise their duty. Human Rights Watchdogs & Indian Judiciary System must be kept out of the proposed military protection system. Govt. must provide appropriate infrastructures & detention centres for smooth functioning of the system. Terrorists caught in this process must be tried in military courts, and after trial process, sent to civilian jails.

Thanks for the informationand the details of the states in which those installations are situated. by Hary Nambiar on 16 Nov 2009

Thanks for the information of the states and the locations in which those facilities are situated. It would have been nice for this news paper to print a map of India and pointed out the locations and provided the areal coordinates of the location for the enemy use. What else is the purpose of publishing newspapers? Indian Express is doing a great job.

Google knows better that any Indian. by YD on 17 Nov 2009

You can get satellite images of these instalations, including closeups, from Google at any time. Moreover, terrorists know more about these places than Indian security agencies.

Nuclear facilities on terrorists' radar by Raj on 16 Nov 2009

Manmohan Singh should initiate talks with Pakis. Sharad Pawar should ensure that Pakistani players play in IPL. Sharad Pawar should also make arrangements to welcome Paki team in Mumbai in case they qualify for World Cup final. All those who are advocating the steps India should take to "Save" Pakistan should be awarded Bharat Ratn. All the various successive leaders of India, irrespective of their hue, who have been warning Pakistan since 1980s first for instigating Khalistan movement and later terrorist activities all over should be awarded bravery awards. They should also be awarded for making ordinary Indians look impotent.

NOW? by RAMESH PATEL on 16 Nov 2009

WE GOT ALERT NOW AFTER SO LONG TIME THEY VISITED, AND WHEN THEY ARE ALREADY CAPTURED? WHY DIDN'T EW FIND OUT RIGHT AFTER THEY VISITED? WE HAVE NO CAPACITY TO GET INTELLIGENCE, ANALYZE THEM, EVEN INTEROGATE SUSPECTS. I WONDER WHAT WILL WE DO EVEN AFTER (if) USA HANDS OVER THEM TO US. WE ARE VERY SMART WHENEVER MONIES ARE INVOLVED, OTHERWISE INDIA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING.

Headley, by Ramesh Hingorani on 16 Nov 2009

What can Headley tell you are already telling in your news. No need to visit the states. just read your news and everybody knows where the nuclear energy plants are

helpful information by prafull on 16 Nov 2009

Besides informing every reader about the locations of all plants and the steps taken for precautionary measures,It would have been nice for the writer to show how to gain access to the sites, and man power in terms of security and how it could be breached.I am not very sure as to who is helping whom. The terrorists being clever or the media providing sensitive information, via such articles which gives even a novice terrorist ideas.
