Varanasi, February 11 Three days after The Indian Express reported that a kidney was illegally removed from a woman at a nursing home in Mau district, police have arrested the nurse involved in the operation.

Sabana, the nurse, was arrested from Malik Tola locality of Mau on Sunday evening, SP (Mau) P K Srivastava said. He said, “Shabana was working as a nurse at Sahara Nursing Home run by Dr Kamran in the Mirza Hadipura locality. Here, the kidney of Hasina Khatoon, the wife of a weaver, was removed. Though Sabana was originally a Christian hailing from Kerala, she later converted to Islam.”

In the complaint filed by Khatoon’s husband Abdul Aziz on November 7, 2007 at Mau’s Dakshin Tola police station, it was alleged that Kamran, alongwith assistants Shabana, Iftiqar Ahmad and Mohd Qamar had removed Khatoon’s kidney on August 31, 2007. She was admitted at the nursing home for a gall bladder surgery. While Qamar and Ahmad were arrested on November 7, it took the Mau police over three months to arrest Shabana.

Meanwhile, Aziz, a scrap trader by profession, alleged: “After the matter came to light, Kamran had offered me Rs 1.60 lakh in return for the original documents pertaining to the operation. Instead I asked him to return my wife’s kidney. If I would have agreed to his proposal, then he would have made me and my wife submit a declaration that we donated the kidney voluntarily.”

“We are not very hopeful of making any major breakthrough as Sabana was a small player. Only after Kamran’s arrest can anything significant be found,” said the SP.

A stone in Hasina’s gall bladder was detected on June 5, 2007 at a Hindu Seva Sadan Hospital in Varanasi. On August 31, Kamran performed the surgery at his nursing home. Three weeks later, at an ultra sound clinic at Dev Bhawan Bhiti, it was revealed that while the gallstone was still present, Khatoon’s right kidney was missing.
