New York, April 9: The 56-member Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) has condemned threats by terrorists to target the United Nations, stressing the world organisation's role in advocating peace and advancing respect and understanding among the people.

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu reiterated the organisation's 'unambiguous and firm support' to the United Nations and its 'universal and commendable role' in catering to the good of humanity at all levels.

While calling for the necessity to protect the safety of the UN personnel and to facilitate their missions, the Secretary General condemned 'all evil terrorist attacks targeting the UN offices and personnel which have caused loss of many innocent lives'.

Ihsanoglu, in a statement, praised the constant efforts of the UN and its indispensable work to help the people of the world to cope with the challenges of the 21st century.

The OIC Secretary General also stressed the role of the UN to bring about peaceful settlements to all disputes confronting humanity, prominent among which were the chronic crisis in the Middle East and the conflicts affecting the Muslim world.

Speaking about the 'high expectations' of the Muslim world from the UN, Ihsanoglu expressed his satisfaction with the ever-increasing cooperation between the UN and the OIC in various fields and highlighted the remarkably positive spirit of cooperation he personally has had with the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the present head of the world body Ban-ki Moon.
