The call was placed on Wednesday morning as earlier attempts to establish contact between the two sides failed to materialise because the PM was travelling abroad.
Singh congratulated Obama on his historic victory and said his success would be an inspiration for the oppressed people all over the world.
The Prime Minister said that the relationship between India and the US was "very good" but "we should not be satisfied with the status quo".
Singh conveyed his best wishes for the success of the Obama administration in meeting challenges that face the world and invited Obama and his wife Michelle to visit India.
Obama praised Singh's contribution to the progress of India as Finance Minister earlier and the Prime Minister now.
The Prime Minister, during the telephonic talks, said that a warm welcome awaited him in India.
Obama expressed his wish for an early visit during the telephonic talks.
Earlier, to dispel all speculation over 'no phone call' from Barack Obama to India after becoming the US President-elect, the government made arrangements to schedule a call on Wednesday between him and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Official sources said there was nothing beyond scheduling issues that had prevented the call from taking place so far. In fact, India was in the first list of countries that Obama wanted to reach out but the proposed time slot was too close to the PM’s departure time for Oman and Qatar on November 8.
Singh too mentioned this to reporters on board the special Air India aircraft on Monday night while flying home from the Gulf. “This is not true (that he chose to ignore India). He wanted to talk to me the day before yesterday (Saturday). We could not establish contact because the time that was suggested was too short for us to interact. And since I have been travelling for the last two days... as soon as I get back...,” he said.
The PM, who leaves for the G20 meeting later this week, recalled his recent interaction with Obama.
“I had a very warm letter from him just before he was elected President. And I myself had written to him... I got a very warm letter from him, a detailed letter spelling out his approach to India, international affairs. Therefore, I have every reason to believe that under him, our relations will get stronger than ever before,” Singh said.
Obama wrote a lengthy letter to Singh during the campaign, spelling out his international priorities. He flagged off three broad issues — combining efforts to combat terror, working together on climate change and on nuclear disarmament.

DIL KO TASALI DENE KO KHYAL TBURRAH NAHIN:What for India is very important for USA the PM will never know and how WARM the letter was we (the citizen of India)won' know either.This is all to impress the people giving a message that the most useless Govt is doing something.All for votes.If it were truly meant by Obama he wouldn't have called only after having called scores of other countries.India was and will remain on the back benches in US policiy makers designs.
Only the rarest of friendships is totally devotional like the love of one's own mother. It is upto oneself to bend and mend the friendship's to one's own advantage, and this can be done only if there remains a spirit of giving something in return. Without such a spirit one would be perceived as totally selfish in other's eyes, and frienship will cease to exist. It is upto us to decide how best to utilise n energy to compete with rest of world, power our industry, and develop more jobs and productivity. Without energy, the industries will remain primitive, we will always be dependent upon outside even for things of daily ordinary life (as is happening now) and keep exporting the raw material to sustain other's economic engines rather than our own's. A poor country like India can not afford such.
people of India should follow these steps ->> eradicate poverty from India>> make sure every body's basic necessities are fulfilled>> encourage people who think differently and give them a role to change rather than allow people like our politicians to drive india.>> No need to wait for any call from any country.>> call Amereeka and ask them if they need anything!!
Obama says that relationship with India is important and at the same time trying to cut outsoursing jobs to India for saving the job for his own country men!!!! India should think of stop doing business with such country where they have one sided interest say for example nuclear deal. It was mentioned that this deal with India will creat 250,000 jobs in the US for their citizens WAW what a great deal. wake up India wake up. Dont let US ruin India. Let it be "give and take" and not just take policy. India already blundered by singing the Nuclear pact with the US. Think over if India has to give business to US when other countries are there to share technology and material at much lower price than the Monster US.
What a tamasha! Indian media is so childish or having fits of inferiority that they had to sulk for the PM not getting call from Obama and now that the PM has recd the famous call, then we need everybody to say that we are the greatest on this planet earth.Hope and pray our Indian leaders can grow their emotional maturity and IQ like to Obama. New US Prez has already shown his level of maturity and understanding, so much so he decides not to intrude into Bush's space during the weekend G20 meet and would like to see what these "big" brains have plans to tackle the financial tsunami.
It is obvious that the media in India is with the vested interest of certain nations and individuals. But as Indians, our first priority is our country. Please do not publish any articles which can tarnish the image of India amoung other nations.jai hind

Manmohan Singh and CQs in India, like George w. Bush, are on their way out and soon be part of history. So Obama should not waste his time with them.

It is pretty obvious that due to such constraints as mentioned here such things can happen.It is the bureaucracy that runs the show.Continuity in foreign policy on global issues is a US priority.But the press needs to sell copies and sometimes makes mountain of a molehill.Hence,not too much ought to be read in the delayed call to the Indian PM.These are matters of state and not one's personal likes and dislike issues.And if Obama wants to help through facilitation,it is better that India doesn't shy away from diplomatic engagement on Kashmir.A fair compromise is always welcome since the people of the country don't gain anything by this festering relic of colonialism.Ask those who have lost family members in issues relating to Kashmir as to what they want.Soft borders are OK and each side manage it's part of territory, and India does so under the Indian Constitution shouldn't hurt anybody.Pakistan anyways is in a mess.India doesn't stand to lose by a moderate Pakistan emergence.Thanks
Once upon a time, we were untochable for the United states of America. Now we have shown our might in all fields especially, the Information Technology, Our PSLVs, and GSLVs, Chandrayan, Our Nuclear explotion and so on. These are achieved with out their help. Now they have removed the untouchability. WE ARE INDISPENSIBLE TO USA
During kargil war I remember the then defence minister saying that all the ordinance factories must be shut forewith. Whatever they are producing are of scrap value. The Bofors gun shells produced in India was exploding inside the barrel itself and distroying the gun . During the height of the war they had procure shells from S. Africa.About the war tanks produced here, the less said the better.This is the other side of our achievements.I have my own doubts about the veracity of our claims in space technology.

Granted the ordnance (an ordinance is an overriding decree from a high ranking official or member of the elite adminstration viz. the President of India etc.) and tanks may not yet be up to snuff. But like you said that is the "other" side of our achievement. We are doing well in "other" areas too. My real problem is with articles like this which betray a cowering beggar like subservience of all things US. Sorry, a little bit more of the spine we can do with in India. But we are all to blame because we don't have the spine to throw these goofball fuddy duddies out of their office and also because none of us want to run for office.
