The 46-year-old Illinois Senator got the support of about 73 per cent of the 343 members of the group who voted in the global primary in India.

The polling, organised by 'Democrats Abroad', a global organisation of overseas Democrats, was held between February five and 12 in the national capital.

Democrats Abroad said in a statement that Obama has also won the party's global primary, the final results of which were certified by organisation's International Chair in Geneva.

In the global primaries outside the US, in which polling took place from 160 countries, Obama has bagged 65.8 per cent votes leaving his opponent Clinton far behind with only 32 per cent vote in her kitty, it said.

"A total of 343 Democrats in India cast their ballot in our polling booth in Delhi," said Carolyn Sauvage-Mar, Chairperson of 'Democrats Abroad-India'.

According to her, 23,000 members of the group have voted globally. No data with regard to the Republicans was available.

She said in this first-ever such polling, which routed the traditional absentee votes for such elections, Democrats living in India responded "excitingly" to this balloting.

"We saw a great diversity of American Democrats taking part in the polling in India, including many first time voters," Sauvage-Mar said.
