New York The incoming Barack Obama administration is likely to appoint veteran troubleshooter Richard C Holbrooke as a special envoy to Pakistan and India amid tensions in the sub-continent following the Mumbai terrorist strikes.

Obama's Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton may name Holbrooke, a longtime diplomat who brokered the Dayton accord that brought peace to Bosnia, as the special envoy, the New York Times quoted "people who have been told of the decision" as saying.

The media report comes even as a Congressional report warns that the fallout from the Mumbai terrorist attacks could further complicate "US policy in South Asia."

"The Administration of President-elect Barack Obama may seek to increase US diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving conflict between these two countries," the Congressional report, released on Wednesday, said.

It cautioned that the incoming administration should stay away from any "high-visibility" focus on Kashmir issue as it would likely evoke Indian resistance and risk fuelling Pakistani expectations of a settlement favouring Islamabad.

The Times also reported that Clinton will keep respected career diplomat William J Burns, who was the pointsman of the Bush Administration on the Indo-US nuclear deal, as the Under Secretary for Political Affairs.

She is also closing in on naming special emissaries to trouble spots in the Middle East and Iran, the report said.

Obama's envoy by Hero Vaz on 11 Jan 2009

Obama is too stupid to understand that India will not entertain any such envoy. India has more stuff and self-respect than he imagines.

USA - AN HONEST BROKER: MY FOOT by Rana on 10 Jan 2009

The first requirement of an "Honest broker" is being "HONEST" and then you can be a broker of peace. By the incoming Vice-President accepting the award from the government of Pakistan, they have lost that badge of honesty. No matter how capable or sincere Mr Holbrooke is, he still represents the administration which doling out money to Pakis when they should have been seriously asking them to stop all the nonsense they are doing. Anyhow, the chicken are going to come home to roost. Pakis are going to show their true colors sooner or later - its a different thing if the US admits it or not. Pakistan is the epicenter of all the terrorist activities in the world. The sooner the world realizes it the better or safer the world will be.

US policy by kumar on 10 Jan 2009

It seems that USA didn't learn any lessons from its past unfortunate events. It blindly supported and tarined talibans against russia and they have to send their army to fight with same talibans. What happened in Mumbai is not a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. Americans and others were also killed. Pakistan is terrorist industry where terrosists get military taining and go to many places on globe to cause destruction. The logiscs of the tarining are supervised by pak army and intelligence. These terrorist tarining isfunded by narcotics smugglers, donations from rich arab nations and also money given by USA. Each word coming out of every pak leader is an open lie and it seems that they are hell bent on continuing this cruel game all over the world. They are simply trying to bluff the whole world. It is high time that USA GOVT must stop funding Pkistan completely and deal with them realistically.

DO NOT FOCUS ON ONE BIZARRE IF YOU HAVE TO SOLVE FROM ROUTE, KEEP TARGET AT ROUTE CAUSE by Pradeep MM on 09 Jan 2009

It is good that Obama's new admin appoints veteran troubleshooter to amid tensions between Indo-Pak. But his aim should not be only on Mumabi terror attack bizarre, he must see that this is not the Kashmir issue rather it is tension due to terror provocation from Land of Pak. which also routed across the nations. Trouble shooting from every country as a global team of unit is what makes the differance.

Moral difficulties insaparable from originality by romesh.sharma on 09 Jan 2009

Right from day one after Obama was elected, even when he was on election compaign,I was of the mind that this guy will prove anti-India and that is what is going to happen. His cunning tricks of taking some Indian:americans in his administration is nothing but to fool India. He is and will ever be of the same idealogy which is anti-India and anti-Hindus after all the blood that flows in his veins and his old connections with the kind of people depicts his mentality. How the hell he can appoint someone to interfere in our internal affairs? Is it not to help/appease Pakistan and make Kashmir an international issue?India must refuse even entry of Richard Holbrooke and anyone who so ever wants to play broker and meddle in Indian affairs. The US' people have done greatest blunder by electing this person and now is the downfall of US asworld only power.GOI must warn Obama to stay out that too immidiately before he comes to some other funny ideas.

Kashmir Envoy by Mahesh on 09 Jan 2009

Earlier the Indian government tells Obama to stay out of Kashmir will be better. Instead of waiting too long for this to develop into something unacceptable to us we have to tell US bluntly about our reservations on the whole issue. We have no reason to trust US on this count. But unfortunately our meek politicians will wait till things will become very complicated and in the end lose out. I still cannot forget Robin Raphael bullying india few years back and India could just do nothing about it and she supported every move of Pakistan whole heartedly and opposed everything india suggested. There is no need for us to believe that things have changes and we will get a fair deal. We must crust the separatist and terrorist activities from J

HOLEBROOKE AS SPECIAL ENVOY? THROW HIM AWAY IN THE DUSTBIN by M.Arun on 09 Jan 2009

Holbrooke cannot be trusted. He already has the master plan for the balkanisation of India. India political leadership must not welcome any US special envoys as they will only safeguard their own national interest and not India's. Holebrooke is a very cunning dangerous man; he masterminded the destruction of Yougoslavia.
