Washington, July 2: Hailing Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw as a "legandary soldier" and an "inspiration" to his fellow citizens, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama paid glowing tributes to the former chief of Indian Army who crafted India's greatest military victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

"I offer my deep condolences to the people of India, on the passing of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. He was a legendary soldier, a patriot, and an inspiration to his fellow citizens," he said.

The former army chief provided an example of personal bravery, self-sacrifice, and steadfast devotion to duty that began before India's independence, and will deservedly be remembered far into the future, Obama said in a statement.

THE REASONS WHY THE BJP, VHP, RSS LEADERSHIP DID NOT ATTEND THE FUNERAL OF SAM BAHADUR MANECKSHAW by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 03 Jul 2008

Where were Vajpayee, Advani, Rajnath and other VHP and RSS leaders, then? Why were they not at the funeral of Field Marshall Sam Bahadur Maneckshaw? It is because they were ashamed to face the jawans, the family, the relatives and those from the Congress party. And the reason is that they knew that they had harangued and poked fun at Indira Gandhi at that time instead of supporting her. Moreover this was at a very tense and sensitive time in the nation’s history when the security and the independence of the whole nation and its people were at stake. These leaders who were then in Opposition, too, as they are now, did not attend the funeral for the fear that the ruling Congress folks there might take their revenge after all these years. This would be by haranguing them in return - for coming to the funeral of a man whose master strategy and plan of action for the nation they were totally ignorant about at that time. And the strategy and plan of action was totally antithesis to what they were preaching against Indira Gandhi at that time. They have probably thought it better to keep a low profile and not let the nation know that they were at the funeral for the fear that all their stupidity that they had displayed in the late 60s and early 70s would come out into the open.

BJP, VHP, RSS LEADERSHIP STILL ASHAMED OF THEIR STAND AND POLITICAL STANCE WHEN FIELD MARSHALL SAM BAHADUR MANECKSHAW WAS SECURING THE FUTURE OF THE NATION by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 03 Jul 2008

It is obvious that they were and are still ashamed of their stand and political stance at that time. Perhaps the thought that they were made to look so out of touch, totally ignorant and stupid and unfit for any leadership positions at any time was still fresh in people’s memory and might shame them again, especially at a time when the elections are thought to be so near.

FM. Sam Manekshaw by Sudeep on 02 Jul 2008

As a Keralite, I am ashamed to know that our Defense Minister A.K. Antony doesn't deserve to be in that post, as he has dishonored it by not personally attending the funeral of a legendary leader

Does Everything Comes Coloured In Religion?? by abhishek on 02 Jul 2008

Why does everything has some connection with religion? Can't we simply put it at rest and see the whole situation in true colours without using the religion filter?Manekshaw was a great man and he should be remembered as such and not as someone who did India proud by defeating muslims or some muslim hater. Do you know he recommended the Pakistani General to be honored because he thought the man fought bravely. He didn't do it to appease muslims. The whole line of thought is rubbish and should be discarded.

Great leaders are always forgotten. by Vijay on 02 Jul 2008

It is all done to appease Muslims, Muslims always hated FM Manekshaw for decimating and humiliating Pakistan. Even defence chiefs played to Congress/Commies to get Governor posts. But remember Vajpayee had also cancelled Kargil anniversory to appease Pakistan and Muslims.

WHAT WE, THE PEOPLE COULD DO TO HONOUR OUR HEROES? by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 02 Jul 2008

Forget the jerks and windbags in politics. What can the ordinary members of the public do to honour their fallen men and women in uniform? What can we do to honour the icons like Sam Bahadur Maneckshaw? We can honour them by placing thousands of Indian tricolours or fresh flowers in or outside our places of worship or outside the Army offices in our villages, towns and cities or by holding religious ceremonies at our club, community or association. Each flag and batch of flowers could represent a soldier who has died serving this country. One thing that I have observed of the British that we could well emulate is the placing of flowers either at the spot where the person has died or at the places of worship. I remember when Princess Diana died in a road accident some years ago, British people expressed their sorrow and love for her and paid tribute to her by placing tens of thousands of batches of fresh flowers outside the places of worship in their villages, towns and cities. When someone dies in any untoward incident or accident in Britain, people there express their sympathy and pay tribute to the dead by placing fresh flowers at the accident spot where the person has died. We could do the same.

Obama pays glowing tribute to Sam Manekshaw by Shreyans Solanki on 02 Jul 2008

Even if Barack Obama did this for the cash rich Indian American audience in US - who are traditional Clinton voters - you have to give it to him - to know the right pulse of the Indian nation. By giving tributes to Sam Bahandur- he has done justice to an individual who has been forgotten by our own political establishment who have forgotten that its the country which is the first and they later and a shameless worldview that now they will go into activity of redemption post obamaspeak- since its our US counterpart who has rightfully recognized where everyone failed or chose not to redeem the man who has given India its only military victory in the last 1000 years .Sam manekshaw deserves more and barack obama has all my Thanks

thanks by A. Manish on 02 Jul 2008

Thanks!! Obama.
