As the Delhi Under Ground (DUG) festival took off on Thursday evening at Kuki at Greater Kailash II, it wasn’t just music that was happening. As the beats of progressive house set the pulse racing, wacky visual projections complemented the experience. As the trio of 20-something guys, who like to call themselves B.L.O.T for their “Basic Love Of Things”, played and scratched the disks in the multi-sensory, multimedia performance, the audience tripped along.

B.L.O.T came into being a year ago when three Delhiites — Gaurav Malaker, Akshar Pillai and Avinash Kumar — got tired of DJs playing item numbers and cheesy hip-hop. “We wanted to experiment with something new,” said Malaker, 23, who deejays and produces the music for the group. While this techno and progressive house act love to mix their music with visuals to make an instant connect with the audience, they love incorporating other things like art and photography as well. “We basically match visuals with the kind of music we play so that both the visual and aural senses are occupied, which eventually makes the listeners connect with us in more than one way,” said Malaker, who has been a deejay for seven years and often gets behind the console and sometimes turns percussionist.

As Malaker thumped the tabla and the darbouka, Pillai, 24, alternated between scratching discs and immersing the audience in the visuals that the group had shot. “The domain of an

A-V ensemble is fairly unknown. So the video footage that we use is not something we plan ahead. We just capture interesting images that tell a story,” said Pillai, who added that the shots could be anything — from the streets of Chandni Chowk to the swish parties of expatriates. So when Kumar went on a European tour recently, he shot 25,000 photographs, a lot of which will find their way into their visual projections at various shows. “We always shoot more material than required from every place that we visit. And when we put them all together, sometimes it makes for a visual cinema that tells a short story as well,” smiled Pillai.

But when these guys are not B.L.O.T-ing, they are busy with their day jobs. Malaker works with a law firm, while Pillai and Kumar have a filmmaking background. “Our dynamics on stage are bound by similar musical sensibilities and yet everything we do is spontaneous, including the mixing of visuals,” said Malaker. With influences ranging from A.R. Rahman to Depeche Mode and Beastie Boys, the group is planning to gig across Europe later this year and come out with their line of fashion gear as well. “We are not just about music and videos. We will soon be diversifying into fashion accessories like bags, shoes and caps by the same name,” said Malaker. So you ready to B.L.O.T. yet?
