New Delhi, March 27: India has said that it will make 'all possible arrangements' to ensure the safety of the Olympic torch during its passage through the country after Beijing expressed concern about Tibetan protestors targeting the flame.

China, which has already expressed displeasure over the storming of its Embassy in New Delhi by Tibetan protestors, had handed over a list of likely Tibetan protests in India ahead of the Olympics to Ambassador Nirupama Rao last week. Beijing had also expressed concern about the safe passage of the Olympic torch in the country.

On Wednesday, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan told mediapersons that arrangements were being made for the security of the flame. “We will make all possible arrangements to ensure that the flame passes through India safely,” he said, responding to questions over Beijing’s concerns.

The Olympic torch is heading from Islamabad to New Delhi on April 17 and will stay in the country for two days before passing on to Bangkok. Beijing became more concerned about the safety of the flame after Friday’s incident in which Tibetan protestors scaled the walls of the Chinese embassy in Delhi and shouted slogans. As reported by this newspaper, Beijing summoned the Indian Ambassador twice last Friday — first to express concern about the Dalai Lama meeting the Vice-President and again to register a formal protest against the breach of security at its Embassy.

While the Dalai Lama has expressed his support for the Beijing Olympics, China has accused him of planning protests aimed at disrupting the games. The official torch lighting ceremony at Athens on Monday was marked by pro-Tibet protests and attempts to disrupt the function.

OLYMPIC TORCH by A.K.SHARMA on 27 Mar 2008

It is really shameful on the part of Manmohan Singh, the prime minister for Muslims in India, whose lame government is banking on the Commies for survival,to give assurance to the Chicoms about the safety of Olympic torch through India.Rather the Indian government should have declared bycott of the Olympics and refused permission for the Olympic torch, which is soaked in the blood of innocent Tibetans.Indian government should wake up to the reality that an independent Tibet is very vital for Indian security. But unfortunately Manmohan is more worried about security of his own government than the national security.

Olympic Torch by Megh on 27 Mar 2008

China never saw this coming; The Tibetans have managed to ruin the chinese pride, " The Olympics" and now the chinese repressive state is staring out at everyones face all across the globe. Protecting the O-Torch is far less significant than the protests against chinese oppresion across the globe and i think the free world should not curtail those, even at the risk of doing business with the " Peoples Republic" of China.
