Mumbai Stating that it was not opposed to love but to its commercial exploitation, Shiv Sena has left scope for its workers to target Valentine's Day celebrations, especially at outlets selling cards and gifts.

"Whatever will happen, will be a spontaneous reaction from Sena workers, especially those belonging to the party's student wing," a Sena leader said on Saturday morning.

"The shop owners have been calling up party functionaries, wanting to know our plans as the Sena has for long been protesting the celebrations."

"Our people understand view of Sena chief Bal Thackeray and party Executive President Uddhav Thackeray on the issue and would act accordingly," the Sena leader said.

Senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi has said workers would stop Valentine's Day celebrations in keeping with the party's policy.

"The day is against Indian culture and tradition. We were opposed to it in the past and there is no change in the party's stand on the issue," the former CM added.

A local party functionary said Valentine's Day festivities would pass off peacefully as shopping malls and departmental stores impose 'self-regulation' following the Sena diktat.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have said whoever takes the law in their hands will be dealt with strictly.

"Everybody has the right to freedom of expression and whoever takes the law in their hands will be dealt with strictly," Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor said. "Those who want to protest against anything can express themselves in a peaceful manner," he said.

valentine and christmas by beljamine on 15 Feb 2009

valentine's day for millions are just days when they express their friendship , trust and love to others. it doesn't necessarily mean boy- girl love and sex. so all these objections are not justified. nor do those who take valentine's day to be for boy-girl love only. a flower , a small gift is a token of the love what one feels for people around them, adults and children alike. the same meaning is given to christmas too among non christians, i guess other religious festivals will come to have the same value in the future as people get the essence of these celebrations

Power of private armies by richard on 14 Feb 2009

Now we know who owns this state. While state's revenue earnings suffer, Shiv Sena is growing in stature. I do not know how much it earns by organizing this kind of spontaneous agitations against commercial activities - this city's lifeline

Who gives the authority to issue a Diktat by Shiva Gopalakrishnan on 14 Feb 2009

The last I checked; India is a democracy. I would like to know who on earth gave Sena the authority to issue a Diktat. This goes against the constitutional right of freedom of expression and this party can and should be de-registered.
