At the meeting, which lasted for barely 10 minutes, Mukherjee is learnt to have asked Singh for an update on the issue. Though the government clearly did not have any solution in mind, the last-minute meeting triggered speculation that there was room for a compromise.
Sources, however, said during the meeting, which began just before 9 pm after the Army Chief was told to wait for 20 minutes, Mukherjee only asked for an update and was keen to know when the case would come up for hearing before the apex court.
As reported earlier, the case is set to come up before a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Friday.
