New Delhi While Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh’s visit to Azamgarh may have generated controversy, Rahul Gandhi is headed there next. He will be visiting the town and interacting with students of the historical Shibli National College. A date for the visit is yet to be finalised.

“I have requested Rahul Gandhi to visit the college associated with the freedom movement,” Digvijay — the party-in-charge for Uttar Pradesh — told reporters here after submitting a report to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on his Azamgarh visit.

With an eye on the 2012 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, all parties, including the Congress, are vying for the Muslim vote. Muslims in the state have also shown signs of returning to the Congress fold after a long gap — reflected in the party’s encouraging performance in the last Lok Sabha polls.

Rahul’s visit to Shibli National College is full of symbolism, coming in the wake of Digvijay’s Monday statement that the youths of Azamgarh were not products of madrasas. Not only was the 124-year-old institution associated with the freedom movement, it is widely known as a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity. Names of Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru are associated with the college.

Digvijay’s visit to Azamgarh, where he raised some questions about the Batla encounter, had been criticised by the BJP as another sign of the party’s politics of appeasement. The Congress initially appeared to be distancing itself from the visit but Digvijay himself disclosed later that he had consulted both Sonia and Rahul on his visit.

The fact that Rahul is now going to Azamgarh means that the Congress is willing to take its chances on the matter. Interestingly, a delegation of party leaders from Uttar Pradesh who met Sonia on Tuesday requested her too to visit Azamgarh.

About his Azamgarh report, Digvijay said that Sonia had assured him that she would request the Centre to take an early decision over the demand to set up special courts to hear all terror-related cases.

It is about time that IE publishes government activity report for all 544 MPs by JP on 11 Feb 2010

Every year, media should publish what did Rahul Gandhi and his 542 friends accomplish for their constituents. If you are very well organized, and care for your constituents and have a desire to grow politically taking care of your citizens, fine. But examine Rahul Gandhi's work for Amethi and you will find failure all over Amethi. Why discriminate prince charming, the goondas and other MPs should also be given grade or star rating based on what did they do for constituents, besides election rallies. Digvijay singh is a caste based divisive politician and Indians should know what has he accomplished for MP for his lifetime devotion (loot) to politics. Good luck to IE on such a project to IE.

shun the caste and religion based politics by L.C.Bilandani on 10 Feb 2010

Rahul Gandhi will be well advised that congress should remain away from this caste based politics which have given a bad name to congress.People of India are matured enough to see the shallow path treaded by congress party which has given miseries to the country.Since Rahul is a well educated person why he cannot forsee that by gaining few muslim votes he will sacrifice a large number of votes both by hindus and muslims.Muslims who have grown up, themselves dislike this religion based politics as in the case of SC,ST people. It is a sad commentary that Digvijay singh is involving in a dirty politics of divide and rule and showing the wrong path to madame Sonia.Congress party can reach back to the old glory if only they avoid religion and caste based politics. It is a mystery why educated people in congress cannot understand simple formula to win the peoples heart and capture the power in states and center. It is a well known fact that Azamgarh has given the maximum no of terrorists to us.

Sonia is smarter than you think! by Soorma Bhopali on 10 Feb 2010

Her understanding of Indian culture and politics is amaze clear. Many in Congress view India from her perspective and not other way around. For someone who was born and raised in west, that maturity in Indian Politics is exemplary! Many times in last couple of decades, many Congress leaders misjudged the mood of people. Sonia never did. Her control over party and country can not be compared to that of Mataji Indira Gandhi. But her dedication to the country and the people cannot be questioned.
