Kolkata, May 30 Focus, hard work and dedication seem to be the mantra for the 18-year-old Birla High School lad — the IIT topper from the eastern region.

Varun Srivastava, with an overall ranking of 115, wants to pursue electrical engineering from IIT-Delhi. He has scored 92 per cent in his CBSE Class XII examinations, with 96 per cent in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. In order to equip himself adequately for the examination, Varun undertook tuitions and studied for 6-7 hours.

“I enjoyed during Class XI but this year I really worked hard and studied seriously,” he said.

“We knew he would come out with flying colours as he was consistent throughout. He was always focused on making it to the IIT," said Anupama Srivastav, Varun's mother, an HR professional.

Owing to his father, B Srivastava's transferable job, Varun appeared for his Class X from Chennai.

At present residing in Ballygunge, Varun came to Kolkata just two years ago and is already in love with the city. And he has not missed a single Harry Potter book -- his favourite being the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

This IIT topper is also a passionate pet lover. "I have a Labrador and a Daschund and I dote on them," he said.
