Oncology conference concludes

Ludhiana, September 25 The National Conference of Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, which was organised by Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, concluded here on Sunday.

Dr Satish Jain, Medical Director and Chief of Surgery and Surgical Oncology, was the organising secretary of the conference. He said that over 500 delegates from all over the country attended the conference. Seven guests from abroad, 75 Indian guest speakers and 50 other renowned surgeons participated as faculty in the conference.

The pre-conference video workshop was held on September 20. It was inaugurated by IASO president Dr S Sadasivam. A total of 16 operative videos were presented by the faculty from Japan and India.

The operative onco surgeries, radical gall bladder cancer surgery, stomach cancer surgery, pancreatic cancer surgery, thorax cancer surgery, neck cancer surgery, breast cancer surgery and keyhole surgery and procedures for gastrointestinal cancers were presented.

The conference was inaugurated by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. PAU Vice Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang; Dr C Palanivelu, president of the Association of Surgeons of India, other past presidents of ASI and IASO also attended the conference.

The theme of the conference was ‘multi-disciplinary approach’ in onco-surgery, which is the hallmark of treatment of cancer today for better survival rates.

There were over 50 poster presentations by the young surgeons, and the best poster were awarded every day. Dr Raghunath Prabhu from Manipal, Dr Nidhi surgeon from Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi and Dr Aliza Mittal, also from Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi were awarded the best poster awards.

Dr Anupam Dass from Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi, Dr Shubh Mahindru from Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Hospital, Ludhiana and Dr Amita Juneja from Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi were awarded the awards for the second-best posters. Onco-quiz was also organised, in which Dr Gopal Gurjar, Dr Vinayak Rohan and Dr Naresh Ledwani from Gujarat Cancer Research Centre, Ahmedabad bagged the top three prizes.

There were seven papers for Detroit fellowship award. The award was bagged by Dr TB Yuvraj from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.

Five free paper and video sessions were held, and nearly 30 papers were presented by the delegates and postgraduates. Of these, 10 papers were presented by the post-graduates of Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Hospital, Ludhiana.
