Dacoit encounter

Jamauli (Chitrakoot) For the past 36 hours, a lone dacoit in a Chitrakoot village has engaged a force of around 400 police personnel, led by UP’s top officers, in an encounter. Ghanshyam Nishad alias Naam has shot dead three policemen, including a company commander of the Provincial Armed Constabulary, and has injured IGP V K Gupta, DIG S K Singh and the Special Task Force in-charge of Allahabad, Navendu Singh.

Ghanshyam is hiding in Jamauli village, in a cluster of around 40 houses. After evacuating the villagers, the police set the houses on fire, hoping to smoke him out. But each time policemen tried to approach the house where he was hiding, they came under fire.

After the policemen were shot, Addl DGP (Law and Order) Brij Lal took charge of the operations and mobilized forces for a round of final attack. However, with darkness falling and police lacking night-vision devices or arrangements to light up the place, the operation was suspended till Thursday morning.

“It is now certain that Ghanshyam is alone and has one self-loading rifle and one rifle of .315 bore with around 250 around of bullets. He has hand grenades too. His SLR was burnt in the fire but he is still alive and has enough ammunition to fight for the next 24 hours,” said Additional SP, Chitrakoot, Jugal Kishore who led the operations on Tuesday.

Addl DGP Brijlal who took over the operations on Wednesday said: “We have lost three men. We will stop the operation only after getting Ghanshyam, alive or dead.”

The Special Operation Group of Chitrakoot got a tip that Ghanshyam, who carries a cash reward of Rs 50,000, was in Jamauli for the birthday of his relative Raj Karan Nishad. When police raided the village at 11 am on Tuesday, Ghanshyam hid in a house and fired at them. He killed a constable, Shameem, and injured two. Additional forces were rushed and by the evening, all the villagers were evacuated.

On Wednesday when the police were searching for him, Ghanshyam shot dead PAC company commander Bani Madhav Singh and Mohd Iqbal, the driver of DIG Chitrakoot. In the next around, he injured the IG, DIG and the STF in-charge.

“Ghanshyam is so sure of his aim and is so quick in his attack and movement that we have yet not been able to find out his exact location”, said an STF sub-inspector.

The operation was hampered by the lack of communication devices and back-up. The police tried to smoke out the dacoit by burning the thatched houses. Though he was seen twice shifting his location, sources said, the police failed to shoot him down.

“Almost all houses were burnt except those built with concrete and cement,” said Gaya Prashad, a villager. Nearly 30 thatched houses were burnt as the villagers watched. “Is kaminey ke chakkar mein hamaar ghar jali gawaa”, said Sukhiya, an 80-year-old woman.

WHY DACOITS AND CRIMINALS ARE FLOURISHING? by B SGANESH, BANGALORE on 20 Jun 2009

It is most unfortunate one dacoit is able to show his strength against so many policemen. There is need to find out why dacoits are flourishing in our country. Is it due to any politicans support or any of the politicians/ police officers are supporting dacoits?. There is keen need for amending our criminalk laws and masive expansion of judiciary and reforming lawyers to think of justice to honest people and country and not advocating for criminals to support them.70 /9 Basappa Layout, Hanumanthnagar, BANGALORE 560 019

compensate the police by Naveed on 18 Jun 2009

It's shame that a lone dacoit with an outdated weapon is battling and killing the policemen. Even 400 of them couldn't capture or kill him for a complete day. The police could have used different methods like bringing a crane to demolish the house or just throw some bombs inside instead of loosing three of its members. The human lives look so cheap when the defenders of our country(the army and the police) loose their lives so meekly. The policemen martyred should be compensated suitably and the Government should make sure that in future policemen are well protected and equipped in the battles with terrorists and dacoits

EFFICIENT GOVERNMENT by KUMAR on 18 Jun 2009

This shows the efficiency of our government if one dacoit is able to threten more than 400 policemen and the village what will happen if there are around 50 such people threatening our people and government?????

Pro Cops by tojoe on 18 Jun 2009

Just shows how well our cops are trained..every six months these guys must taken for a month of fitness and refresher course..Its sad the state of the cops..They are only busy listening to their political bosses and doing all good for nothing things..Next to poitical establishment the cops could be termed as the most corrupt. It just shows wat will happen if there's one more terror attack..nothing will change unless police reforms are implemented.. they only know wat 303 is and even that they would have handled only during their training..i am sure most of them wouldnt have fired a weapon for the past 10-15 years..they need to be trained every year for a month at least

Vir Chakra by KVSKumar on 18 Jun 2009

THE POLICEMEN ARE JUST LIKE WATCHMEN WITH NO SKILLS by n.krishna on 18 Jun 2009

OUR POLICEMEN ARE THIEVES IN UNIFORM, THEIR ABILITY IS ONLY TO FOLLOW UP RAPE CASES AND CARD GAMBLING AND ILLICIT LIQUOR,AS MOST OF THE POLICEMEN ARE RAPISTS AND GAMBLERS AND DRUNKARDS.

One UP dacoit vs 400 policemen by Anil on 18 Jun 2009

We perhaps need this dacoit to train the Indian police. Under his leadership, it seems, our battles with terrorists will yield much greater success.

Nishad must be recruited into army by UNseclulooar on 18 Jun 2009

Nishad must be recruited into army instead of useless police recruited by Mul layam Sing and Maya Whati on the basis of cast and relig gion (moro nity relig gion of course) rather than any capability.

MR. by ROOP SHARMA on 18 Jun 2009

One dacoit and 400 police men with arma and ammunition to counter. We the countrymen can not help laughing with shame. When did police came to know about this dacoit? This question is being asked by countrymen. The answer is very simple.dacoits meets dacoits. When difference occur over share then dacoits becomes enemies.

Laugh or Cry... by RKP on 18 Jun 2009

I cant believe this.....they are even praising the guy for his aim and movement. Three lives, scores injured and houses burnt for catching a Dacoit!!! So much for professionalism. Time to outsource security in India to some one more competent....

Fake degree products of the banana republic of north india by A Gokak on 18 Jun 2009

they'd have done better had they outsourced the killing to a rival gang!

It is number game by Anshul on 18 Jun 2009

It is proved now that great Indian state survives only on numbers. Army chef says there are 600-700 terrorists in Kashmir but we have 6 lakh trrops stationed there. 5-6 teenagers with training of a month could stand to our elite commandos for 5-6 days in Taj and now this untrained Dacait with antiquated weapon is holding 400 policemen.

Incompetent UP police by Subhash on 18 Jun 2009

One dacoit holding 400 UP police show how strong is police machinary. I feel sorry for villagers whose houses are burnt.

ONE DACOIT AND 400 POLICEMEN by SATHVIK on 18 Jun 2009

WHAT A WATEFUL OF POWER AND MANAGEMENT ,THIS IS INDIA,IT HAPPENS ONLY IN INDIA.

Mr. by Jai Singh on 18 Jun 2009

This is the Indian police at its worst. It is a direct reflection on the law and order machinery in the Mayawati regime. It is also a pathetic example of how unprofessional the Indian police forces are. If one dacoit with a bolt action rifle can hold up 400 policemen what will happen when trained terrorists strike a heavily populated area that UP is?

unprofessional force by reaz on 18 Jun 2009

we know are police force is one of the least professional once and the most corrupted. i feel sorry for the poor villages whose houses are burnt, i doubt will ever the police force compensate or help them build their house. the best way to train our force is to send them to LTTE.

Shame on police by umesh on 18 Jun 2009

Up is a failed state and its police uses such fantatstic tactics of burning the thatched huts. Ask them what will these people do during rains. Mayawati has thousands of crores to spend on parks and statues but she doesnt have few hundred crores to spend on modernising the police. SHAME ON UP... SHAME ON MAYAWTI...SHAME ON DALIT POLITICS. A LOUD MURDABAD FOR MAYAWATI. GOD WHEN WILL UP GET RID OF THIS SCUM

Chor Sipahi by rohit on 18 Jun 2009

He! He! He! Hats off to dacoit. If caught alive his expertize to hold off 400 men can be utilized.

SHAME SHAME by KUMAR on 18 Jun 2009

SHAME this is the situation in one of India s biggest state all because of the misrule by Mulyam and Mayawathi only goondas and dacoits are in a position to live in U.P.
