New Delhi, July 4: Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh on Friday clarified that his opposition to the finance and petroleum ministers was not personal and was targeted against their policies.

“Our fight against price rise and inflation will continue. It is not against any individual whether it is the finance minister or the petroleum minister. It is against windfall profit (made by oil refineries),” Singh told reporters after his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“Due to shortage of steel and cement, their export is banned. We demand that export of petroleum be banned. Steel and cement and petroleum should be treated at par,” Amar Singh said.

On Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, whose removal was reportedly sought by Samajwadi Party while dealing with the United Progressive Alliance government on the nuclear deal, Amar Singh said, “he should behave as a petroleum minister and not as minister for private refineries.”

He said Deora should not have defended the windfall profits made by refineries.

“Our fight is against rising inflation. We have nothing against (Finance Minister) Chidambaram and Deora. They are personal friends,” the SP general secretary clarified.

“There is a nefarious propaganda of our opposition that we are striking a deal with the prime minister and (Congress president) Sonia Gandhi and are blackmailing,” Singh said.

“We are not wheeler-dealers. We are not here to join any cabinet. We are not dealing for any cabinet berth. All our politics is about national interest,” Singh claimed.

Considering the importance of such issues, one has to bear in mind that there is a concept of collective responsibilty of the Government and no individual ministry can have a poicy of its own on such matters. Let us be fair to the Government and also the individual members of the Government.

Are we paying the same price by arun on 04 Jul 2008

Are we paying the same price of $145 even to the crude that we generate within our country. And if the oil comanies are indeed incurring losses then how is that their share value is rising. Recently the GAIL (The Gas Authority Of India Limited) which is Government owned company announced bonus share. Where did they get the money from.

Oil profits by Joginder on 04 Jul 2008

It is amazing how remote our politicians are from the reality. Oil refineries (in India) are not making any windfall profits and I do not expect any of the India based oil exploration and production companies to be making it either. India is a major importer of Crude oil, majority of the windfall profit is made by international oil majors due to high crude oil price. There is not much government can do against the rising crude oil prices. There is only a limit to which Government can further increase oil subsidies without an adverse impact on the long term health of the economy.

Wah Bhai Wah by Santhosh on 04 Jul 2008

Respected Mr. Singh, whom are you fooling. Dont you think the game you are playing is not rightly sensed. If you do know the rules of Politics, please note that everything is for sale, you are trying to protect one set of ambani brothers by pitching against Petroleum ministry. I raise a simple question, if you were so keen on all these issues, please let me know one ocassion where you have raised this issues. You are trying to garner support of congress to bring down mayawati government and arrest the increasing influenceof BJP. Because in UP if you do not toe with congress, its major drawback as congress will eat up your voteshare. Wah Bhai Wah hum sab ne to politics aap logoan se seekha aur aaj aap national interest ke baatein kar rahe hai. Only farmers, soldiers and scientists work for national interest and politicians do not find place in the list. Please do good works so that even later generations will remember you sir, please
