Ordinance on compulsory use of Punjabi soon, says Badal

Chandigarh, March 30 Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said the Government would soon issue an ordinance on compulsory use of Punjabi in official work and as a subject in schools up to class X irrespective of their board or affiliation.

He said the government would wait till the next session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to implement its decisions. The CM called for worldwide campaign for the preservation and promotion of Punjabi language and culture.

Harcharan Bains, media adviser to the CM, said Badal also announced the creation of an endowment fund to introduce health insurance for the needy and aged Punjabi writers and intellectuals. He also announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha (Sekhon), Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha and Punjabi Sahit Academy, Ludhiana.

The CM also asked the writers to prepare a detailed proposal for the grant of Rs 25 lakh for renovation of Punjabi Bhawan in Ludhiana, said Bains. Badal asked Punjabi writers to constitute a seven-member committee to prepare a blueprint for greater interaction between the government and writers and intellectuals for the promotion of Punjabi culture. Those who met the CM included poet Surjit Patar, novelist and critic Jaswant Singh Kanwal, story writers Gulzar Singh Sandhu and Mohan Bhandari.
