Sitaram Yechury

New Delhi Naxalism could not form a base in West Bengal for 30 years since its inception due to the political battle waged by the organised Left, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury has said.

"Please remember that Naxalbari is a village in West Bengal from where this ultra-Left (Naxal) deviation took place. And for 30 years they could not come back to West

Bengal only because of the fight we had put up," he said in an interview. He charged the Trinamool Congress with bringing them back, saying "they were imported into West Bengal by our political opponents ... in order to be used against us." Yechury said the Trinamool Congress, which was "sitting in the Central government", wanted to fight the Left "using the Maoists and gave them shelter, gave them patronage. They were brought in from across the border (of the state)".

Defending the release of some tribal women in exchange for a police officer who was held captive by the Maoists, he said they were "hapless tribal women and not hardened Maoists".

The senior Marxist leader said the CPM's fight against the ultra-Left dated back to the late 1960s and early 1970s when over a thousand of its cadres were killed.

"We are the ones who have lost the maximum number of people in the fight against the Maoists," he said. To questions as to why the state government was failing to control the Maoists, Yechury said their activities were primarily concentrated in three districts of West Bengal bordering Jharkhand or Orissa.

In this context, the CPM leader gave the example of Veerappan, saying the forest brigand operated for two decades in the jungles of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

"Could you catch him? ... Unless the forces of all the three states work together, it is not possible. That is how Veerappan was caught and this is what is required now," he said.

Despite this deprived people and downtrodden in the country get flocked to armed Maoism and Naxalism and that too when democratic communist movement is alive and kicking? Why so Mr.Yachury (Also ask your PB and CC Members). Maoists and Naxalists are demanding land for the tiller. Why is it that communist movement in the country are not so vociferous about this issue? Why don't your party is not seen organizing farmers who are alive and the families of those committed suicide to demand radical land reform? Do you think the issue a lost case? The issue would have or even would give more mass support to communist movement in the country than what ram-mandir issue gave to BJP. Why CPM or CPI are not interested in it Mr.Yachury? Because...flawed Hindutwa of BJP and insincerity of Communists have caused opposition space to be virtually vacant or absent. The voice of the haveless are not heard in Parliament and Assemblies. Hence Maoism and Naxalism are growing. Do your duty to stem it!

The heading should have been a little bit different i.e. "ORGANISED LEFT(?) CONTRIBUTED TO NAXALISM AND MAOISM IN THE COUNTRY". Mr. Yachury, please accept the failure of communist leadership to spread and grow on its own in the country. Inequity and social injustices of capitalist system have been the mother of communist movement all over the world. In India both inequity and social injustices are applenty. Why did it happen that communist movement in the country continues to be confined to just three states in the country, viz. Tripura, WB and Kerala, even after 6 decades after independence?. The reason is simple, that the communist leadership in the country have been infiltrated by capitalist and greedy elements who want to just do lip service to the cause of communism. You cannot be unaware of the fact that Indians by nature of their DNA dislike even abhors hurting others (forget killing).

LEFT VS MAOISTS. by R..Ghosh on 09 Nov 2009

D/Sir,The Communists of West Bengal were themselves educated& poor, most of them. They organized the intelligent Nuxalites, developed paid CADRES,unleashed a reign of terror, managed to win elections by fooling people.Through unprincipled Unionism they closed factories, broke the backbone of established Industrial Houses by destroying Work culture of the people.Made them helpless without employment. They became slave to the PARTY.NOW,most of the leaders have become RICH.So the HAVENOTS of communists have gone to their BASICS and trying their old 'POWER through BARREL OF GUN' principle instead of PSEUDO Democratic process adopted by communists through violence. MR.YECHURY had been to Nepal not long back to advice the MAOISTS there during their AGITATION His services may be useful to appease the Maoists of W.B. Why they are blaming other Parties? What Communists did to CONGRESS in the Sixties and seventies Maoists are doing the same thing, paying them in their own COINS! PARKALAM.

The poor of the creamy-parties are in mirage! by George P. Joseph on 09 Nov 2009

This is a life for everybody to live for a finger-limit of years. Everybody knows what is feudalistic atrocities. After all the poor hicks and peasants would not be allowed to live in India comparing to the creamy parties activities in Indian Politics. Creamy want servility. Gone are the days Creamy intellectuals. That is the 30 years in WB, elsewhere in India. When you undergo such a situation in life you may think of Yetuchuri or somebody like. Since you have sufficient daily need and the have-nots are being infatuated and intimidated to vote for the Creamy by holding Ancient Doctrines to distorting the ancient values into modernity. The poor of the creamy parties are in mirage. Gone are the Days!

Oh Yeah! Then I'm the true King of Scotland by Venkat on 09 Nov 2009

How can one really believe Sitaram Yechury? The Marxists were, are and will be Chinese agents working against the development of India. If I had my way I'll ban the Communist Party. Make no mistake- The CPI-M pose a clear and present danger to the Republic of India and need to be eliminated before the cancer spreads and probably consumes the country in mayhem and chaos.

CPM RIP by Hero Vaz on 09 Nov 2009

The CPM and Yechury are slowly trying to get their bloodied tail up. They haven't realised that the last election wrote their epitaph and the right thing for them to do is to rest in peace !!!

Naxals are your brothrens, yechuri by L.C.Bilandani on 09 Nov 2009

Blaming Trinamool Congress is easy for naxal menance.CPM itself has acted on the same lines as Naxals do to avoid establishment of any other democratic political party all these years.CPM has unleashed violance to its hieght and now since Mamta has established her roots in bengal, CPM is being over protective and playing the blame game.Sitaram, can u tell people what prevents your govt. to stop this infiltration of Naxals.Your party never allowed industrialisation of the state and you people intentionally kept the state backward so that CPM may have upper hand. Now thier are reports that your own masters sitting in China are supporting the naxals and maoists in your state to destablise India.Good if you appeal to them not to do so.People had given CPM a chance to play a fair game and do development work but you people chose to destablise the then govt. You first cleanse your own states where your party is in ruling majority. Both kerala and Bengal are hot beds of corruption & inefficency.

Yachury and Basy begging to Sonia by Rammohan on 09 Nov 2009

Your great party had ruled Bengal for 30 years. all the intellectual had migrated to other states and living quite propsperous too. By associating with Sonia what did you do to solve the Naxal issue. You guys sit at Delhi's Gopalan Bhavan and never gone to solve any issue. Your cadres were goons, attacked and decimated all the opposition and you guys thought it will stay so too. Sorry Pal, you first declare your own assets and then we will know what big rich man you are.

'Organised Left prevented naxals from forming base in WB' by N.V.SANKARAN on 08 Nov 2009

This is perhaps the most hilarious comments coming from Mr. Yechuri. Anybody with a bit of common sense knows that the Naxals and Marxists are the offsprings of the communists whose basic ideology is "power through the barrel of a gun" and "grab everything from the haves(rich) distribute the loot amongst the have-nots(poor) and create an equality of have-nots". In the Indian context, the mainstream communists do this through ballots. But the extremists amongst them resort to the use of arms. In this quest for power by the Maoists and Naxals who always had the covert support of the communists, those who really suffer are the poor people.

Yechuri's brilliant discovery by Shanticharan Mishra on 08 Nov 2009

Normally, Sitaram Yechuri talks sense, but in this case, the poor fellow is so much on the back foot,he can only babble.

Goons and Thugs of India by Indian on 08 Nov 2009

Mr Sitaram, Looks like 30 years of power in WB has not resolved any common problems for poor. Few years ago the communist rule was touted as golden rule with very good land reforms. Now the truth is coming out. Looks just like the BJP, Shiv Sena, RSS, you had used money, muscle, goons and state power to push them to abject poverty. We the people of India are paying for the mis-rule of communists. Anyways pack your bags and go to Russia , China and learn what is true patriotism and what true leaders do for their people. Most important disband all your violent unions all over India and work for the progress of country. The people will automatically vote you to power.

Same mindset ... by Manoj on 08 Nov 2009

Naxalites and Left Front are same. They want power through intimidation and no accountablity. Naxalites are the "Left Front" people who couldn't access power or money while Left Front has been in power !!!

Mr.Yechuri was sleeping.. by Rakesh on 08 Nov 2009

Mr.Yeschuri was sleeping, not only he, but also the communist parties in west bengal state. The head office of Naxalism is from WB.. Now they are playing politics with Md.Mamatha banergee. The communists in India, will not take any responsibility for their bad political agenda.. The communist party of WB is solely responsible for the rise of naxalism in India...

'Organised Left prevented naxals from forming base in WB' by Ravinder Makhaik on 08 Nov 2009

Mr Yechury, That is a flawed argument. The reason for Naxalism or Maoism to root anywhere is the disparity among have's and have-nots. If the CPI(M) dominated West Bengal government for 30 years has not been able to bridge this gap and continues to rely organised cadre base management for containing the problem, then someday the cup is bound to overflow. If ordinary and hapless women and not hardened Maoists were exchanged for release of a kidnapped police officer, why in the first place were such innocent women locked up in the first place.
