Jharsuguda (Orissa), May 15: A tribal man and his four-year-old daughter were crushed under the wheels of a bus after being allegedly pushed out of the vehicle by its conductor for paying Rs two less than the exact fare, police said on Thursday.

Thirty five-year-old Sanichar Toppo had boarded the bus with his daughter at Talpatia, five km from here, on Tuesday. When he failed to tender the exact fare as he had no money, the conductor continued to demand the balance amount of Rs two, police said.

The ticket fare for his journey was Rs 10.

When the bus started moving, the father and daughter were allegedly pushed out of the bus by the conductor on state highway No 10.

The conductor and driver were later arrested. Local residents and passengers set the bus afire and blocked the state highway for quite some time before police personnel rushed to the area and dispersed the crowd.

Expressing grave concern over the tragedy, state Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 100,000 for Toppo's next of kin.

The compensation would be paid from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, official sources said.

Perspective by Ashika on 18 May 2008

The conductor should have (obviously) not pushed the man or his daughter out of the bus. It gets me thinking though - the conductor could have gotten into trouble for giving a Rs.10 ticket for someone who had paid only Rs.8. He could have showed his annoyance, could have asked the driver to stop the bus and demanded that this duo who had not paid the full price of the ticket get off the bus. My amazement is at the other people in the bus. How long would it have taken two people to give a rupee each or even 4 people to give 50 paise each to help a man in distress. Somtimes, we Indians talk a lot, burn a lot of buses, create a lot of hungama and make great spectators. When it comes to getting out there and doing a deed that makes a difference, its only a small percentile that complies. Here's to my countrymen and women (and myself) to be pro-active/active, but be active all the same. Anyone can be a spectator.

DEMON OF A CONDUCTOR by SATYANARAYAN MOHAPATRA on 18 May 2008

Sometimes it is too much to think of some humans who behave like demons. As appointed in a public transport he should have behaved in a more cultured way assisting help to passengers when they need. Now after two has gave up their precious lives no more we will hear or see such incidences as the minister set a agenda regarding the appointment of conductors. Not in transport or Orissa alone, but in all over the country there are numerous beasts appointed erroneously who maltreat women, child and men without any provocation like a cricketeer recently.

Violence by Yogesh Datta on 16 May 2008

This gentleman with four year old baby girl did pay Rs8.00 and if he had another two rupees he would have paid. The reason is built-in violence in Indians and greed. Obviouly the Conductor and driver had pocketed four rupees each. Why I say "built-in violence" ? The reason is whenever I visit India I see more violence, intolerance, pushing people out of trains and buses, more rapes, murders, road rage, gang fights, gang rapes, people looking for trouble, violent driving, more population, more corrupt politicians and bureaucrats and even the shop keepers are bad tempered. The reason is total breakdown of morals, law and order and failure of justce system.

inhumanact by shurkumishra on 16 May 2008

dear sir, the news although shoking but not unusual for orissa. let us not try to divide people in the name tribal vs nontribal or high caste vs low caste. it can happen to anybody if he is poor. the poor does not have any caste. what we need is strict intolerance to such henious crime.not only the conductor and driver should be punished but also the owner of the bus should also be severely punished because the owners knowingly employ goons as drivers and conductors so that they can bully the public, take overload and get hansome return to the owner. more over whatever compensation and exgratia is paid by the govt. should be recovered from the owner.to my mind why the taxpayers be punished for someone else's crime.shurkumishra

Time to think... by Natarajan on 16 May 2008

Think about this - the tribal man and his daughter did not have money to pay the fare. Being from a tribal background, they do not get the basic human dignity that you are I are entitled to. So many people of low castes and tribals are treated and talked at in the most demeaning manner in India. How wrong would it be, if they converted to Christianity for some money and dignity? It is then that we protest. Why then? Why not now? Has BJP and other hindu based organization unequivocaly denounced casteism and embraced low castes and tribals as equals? In TOI there is a news abt Omar Abdullah - who said Muslims were silent when the Kashmiri Pandits were being driven away from their homes. Same can be said about we upper castes. We are silent as the low castes and tribals are being stripped down of their basic dignity.

I beg to differ by Not a castist on 16 May 2008

I think what happend is really really bad and feel sorry for it. But I think many of these so called down trodden and 'lower cast'disadvantaged simply don't like being civilized. I have some across many 'lower cast' people in my life, who didnot pay bills, stole electricity directly from wires and remember, they had masters degrees and earned 10 times more than my family. It does not make what happend with this poor man right, but let's not say he was thrown out of the bus just because he was lower caste. I can show a thousand people from lower cast, whi break the law citing Ambedkar, even earning millions of rupees every year.

God forsaken place...Orissa --a Bihar in making by Panda on 15 May 2008

My thought is, people listen to you when they have a good quality of life and a secure tomorrow. Orissa is a God forsaken place, a Bihar in making. The reson for people being so barbaric is failed government policies. I feel ashamed when I visit Puri in the way Oriya speakers con tourists, the driver for this behaviour is bad governance.

Ahhhh by raja on 15 May 2008

Heavens must be crying on such a tragic death of a young father and his innocent daughter.I cried my eyes out when I thought that how terrified and scared that little innocent girl would have been when that conductor was bullying her dad before murdering them.I wish I could kill that conductor the same way.
