Bhubaneswar The Orissa Government will amend the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code(CrPC) to enable videoconferencing of accused persons from their respective prison cells. The State Cabinet which met here Sunday evening decided that section 167(2) of the CrPc would be suitably amended to facilitate videoconferencing of an accused during trial.

Development Commissioner TK Mishra said the move would eliminate the antiquated and expensive system of transporting under-trial prisoners (UTPs), who constitute one-third of the total 15000 inmates in the State's 140 prisons, to courts.

Though the Centre was supposed to amend the CrPC for the same it is yet to get the process moving. "As law and order is a State subject, Orissa hastened up the process. An ordinance would soon be brought," said Mishra.

The funding for the project will be centrally-funded from the E-court system. The facility is currently available in the jails of Choudwar, Bhubaneswar and Berhampur. It will soon be extended to the other state jails.
