Kolkata, March 5 Almost a fortnight has passed since the Calcutta High Court granted bail to 40 Forward Bloc workers who were detained after police firing in Dinhata last month. A condition laid by the court in its order has, however, left the party workers confined in a Silliguri hotel.

On February 20 when the court granted them bail, it said that they should not be allowed to enter Cooch Behar district until further orders. A week later, they were released but since all of them were from Cooch Behar district they had to make an alternative arrangement.

The party leadership then decided to lodge them in a hotel at Alipurduar, in Jalpaiguri district, and paid all the expenses.

The district police, however, informed the Judicial Magistrate of Dinhata that the hotel in Alipurduar was illegal since its owners have no proper licence to run it.

The party leadership then shifted the supporters to government-owned Hotel Mainak in Siliguri.

Udayan Guha, a local Bloc leader, told The Indian Express that the party shifted these supporters to Mainak hotel so as to comply with the court order. The party is consulting its legal advisers to move a petition in the High Court for the relaxation in the bail condition.

“The supporters had been staying in the hotel for the last six days under the watch of the party leadership. They regularly report to the local police station in compliance with the court’s order,” Guha said, but refused to disclose the daily expenditure that the party has to bear to keep their supporters in the hotel.
