New Delhi Manu Sharma, convicted in the Jessica Lall murder case, returned to Tihar jail before expiry of his parole following mounting criticism that he violated parole norms, prompting Delhi government to ask police to investigate the allegations.

32-year-old Sharma, whose two months of parole was to expire on November 22, reported in the jail at around 11:45 am, a top jail official said.

Sharma, who was released from jail on September 22 on the ground of his mother's illness, was reportedly spotted in a nightclub in a hotel here on Saturday night. His mother was seen addressing a press conference in Chandigarh last week.

Actor Arjun Rampal, who co-owns a bar in Delhi's Ashoka hotel, confirmed that Manu was spotted there.

The reports triggered a major controversy with legal experts and opposition BJP alleging that he was granted parole under "political pressure" by the Delhi government, a charge strongly denied by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit who said it was done within the ambit of the law.

Following criticism, the Delhi government asked the city police to investigate whether Sharma violated the parole norms by moving out of Chandigarh and paying a visit to the capital.

Sharma should not have been present in Delhi as he was given parole under the condition that he will visit Chandigarh to meet his "ailing" mother, a top Delhi government official said.

"We have sought a detailed report from Delhi Police about whether Sharma visited the city," he said.

Rampal said Sharma apparently visited the bar as a guest of Sahil Dhingra, one of the members and owner of a leading apparel export company.

"We have revoked the membership (of that particular member) after we came to know that Sharma had entered the bar. We got to see it (his visit) because of the CCTV footage," the actor claimed.

Police came to the LAP bar following a complaint against Dingra, who allegedly picked up a brawl with the son of a senior police officer in the adjoining Ashok Hotel's F-Bar.

Dhingra was allegedly accompanied by Sharma to the bar. Sameer Thapar, vice president and managing director of JCT Ltd, was also present in bar and was taken into preventive custody along with Dhingra, sources said.

However, Sharma allegedly gave a slip to police by escaping from the bar through the rear door.

Thapar claimed he was about to leave the bar when police asked him to come out of his car. Police then took him and Dhingra to the police station. He said police were asking Dhingra whether Manu was with him.

Alleging that he was treated like a criminal, Thapar said he was not told why he was detained for about 12-13 hours.

Coming down heavily on Delhi Police, he said, "The entire experience that I went through was extremely harrowing. It's something they can do to anyone. It has left the worst taste in my mouth."

OUT ON PAROLE,Manu sharma by Shadi Katyal on 11 Nov 2009

It is evident that there was no inquiry made about his mothers health but Politics and money played the part. How can he be released when his mother is on lecture tour. What if any action is being taken against the officials???Is this going to be similar to his trail where he was released and allowed now to go out of jail and to night clubs. What kind of justice we have. What about feelings of Lall family. Presume he lives like a rich man in jail also . What a hypocrisy and double game of Law and Order

Manu Sharma's voluntary acceptance by Akriti on 10 Nov 2009

Voluntarily going back to jail can give some good omensign for Manu Sharma. But why is it that our government always have a reason to hide its wrong acts. Sometimes it leaves with a question that whether they are ever going to overcome with their sheer excuses.

Manu Sharma by Indrajit Sarma on 10 Nov 2009

Manu Sharma is a wild animal. He should be chained and kept in the isolation ward of Tihar. The scam related to his parole should be immediately investigated by the CBI.

Proper use of law: Parole by Neha Anand on 10 Nov 2009

Surrending himself to the law has definitely proved that the morality level is not gone down completely. But what is our government doing? Is checking that the parole granted convicts are deserving this or not.

morality ...what............. by pravin on 11 Nov 2009

dear neha, u got it absolutely wrong .. this definitely can not be a decision of the spoilt brat.. he was asked to do so by his lawers( read Ram Jethmalani) to surrender himself bcos had he not done that and court had cancelled his paroll...he definitely would have lost his chances in future to exploit the law with his money power .. hang him pls..

MORALITY by NIRANJAN on 11 Nov 2009

YOU CALL A PERSON GOING BACK TO JAIL 'VOLUNTARILY' AFTER IT WAS SHOWN ON TV THAT HE HAD OBTAINED THE PAROLE BY FRAUD AND HAD VIOLATED THE PAROLE CONDITIONS, MORALITY? YOU PLACE MANU SHARMA ON A VERY HIGH PEDESTAL. PEOPLE WHO GRANTED HIM PAROLE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND PUNISHED. BUT THAT WOULD BE TOO MUCH TO ASK OF A CORRUPT GOVT. OFFICIALS!

Kudos by suchithra on 10 Nov 2009

Kudos to congress. It will free Afzal & Kasab too one fine day.Just wait & watch

Manu Sharma's Parole by Varind on 10 Nov 2009

Manu Sharma's going back to jail voluntarily has proved that even convicts have some conscience but politicians don't. Delhi government's action which recommended his Parole should be probed and a severe action must be taken. There can't be different law for rich and congressmen and another for common people.

Safest Inside Tihar Jail by unohoo on 10 Nov 2009

Manu Sharma-threat to civil society by Radhika on 10 Nov 2009

It is now proven beyond doubt that Manu Sharma is a threat to civil society. Out on parole he created similar situation which led to the crime he is convicted. The ruckus created by him and his friend is now all over the papers. Not only should the parole be cancelled, but his conduct should also be recorded so that his family is not able to manipulate law any further. In the meantime it needs to be investigated as to what led to the grant of parole and its subsequent extension.

CIVIL SOCIETY by NIRANJAN on 11 Nov 2009

I AGREE WITH YOU. MANU SHARMA IS A SPOILED BRAT BEHAVING LIKE A KING OR A PRINCE. OUT ON PAROLE, IT DID NOT TAKE HIM LONG TO VIOLATE THE PAROLE CONDITIONS AND GET IN A FIGHT. IF UNCHECKED, HE WOULD HAVE MURDERED ANOTHER INNOCENT GIRL!
