“Often one comes across good and talented students, who lose out on world class education because of their poor economic background. So, as a part of our group’s CSR activities, we thought why not give these needy meritorious students the opportunity to have a level-playing field with richer students, so that money is not a constraint for them to pursue their dream career,” said Atul Goel, MD, Goel Ganga Group, at a press conference recently.
Academically sharp students from PCMC schools will have to undergo a rigourous test, after which the top ranking students will be selected for the scholarships.
Sonu Gupta, director, GIIS, Pune, said, “GIIS will give scholarships only to cover the fees of the student, which would be to the tune of Rs 30,000 annually. However, the student will have to incur the costs for uniform, books and school bus which would be quite nominal.” She stressed that the student’s progress would be monitored, to see that he is on par with the other students in his class. This is to ensure that the student does not become complacent.
“GIIS is a school, where students are being imparted Indian education with a global background, with classes from kindergarten, right upto junior collegee,” said Shailesh Temurnikar, director, GIIS.
GIIS Pune, with a network of intelligent campuses in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand and India, imparts a global perspective and orientation to students and aims to equip them with the knowledge that will make each student a successful Global Indian.
Since children studying in municipal schools mainly come from the slum areas or the lower income group category, this could truly be a turning point in the life of a handful of slum children, transforming them into global citizens. “We aim at creating great Indians,” said Gupta.
GIIS Pune is located at Swar Ganga, one of the finest mega township projects spread over 18 acres, at Vallabhnagar, Pimpri.

Open Letter to Justice CS Dharmadhikari from GIIS Parents.http://forabettergiis.blogspot.com/2008/04/open-letter-to-justice-cs-dharmadhikari.html
Another explanation is they are trying to use money to "buy" better CBSE results ? Is it possible ?http://forabettergiis.blogspot.com/2008/04/1-april-2008-april-fool.html
Due to projected shortage of skilled manpower there is the danger that GDP of advanced countries may not grow as fast as they want to grow a decade from now. India has the raw material, a large young population which is potentially more useful to the whole world if properly tapped. India is perhaps not keen enough to exploit this raw material as it is about to mature into a stage where it can be moulded easily. Handpicking only the best brains and taking them out of India for further moulding is a good practical move which will benefit the world as a whole.
GIIS Singapore = bunch of rich (too much dollars) but poor (low academic) students. Their parents have already 'arrived' so their children have no need to go thru the highly demanding academic pressure of Singapore.. so go to GIIS and relax. To show good results GIIS Singapore imports indian students before they write exam, offering some carrots like scholarship. win-win for all, right?
A lot of comments in similar vein are already written in an internet petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/GIIS1234/petition.html)which again points out something going wrong and worth investigating.
This scholarship for a PCMC student is just a ploy to attract public attention. The Singapore school where my sons study adopted a similar programme of inviting people to write tests for getting scholarships in 2002 and 2003; the scholarship amount ,which was peanuts, was withdrawn after one year. So, now, people who got admitted expecting scholarship received less than 25% of what was promised for just one year and now are stuck in the same school. In the process, the school got huge publicity and a lot more students!
The word 'intelligent campuses' whatever it means is a false claim. My kid was in GIIS Singapore and in IT lab whole of last year there is not even 1 properly working PC to 1 student, 2 or 3 sharing a PC because half the PCs are not working. Nobody cares. Perhaps the GIIS in India are good schools, I don't know ? Over here it stands for low quality education for transiting indians. Nobody cares because it is just for 2 years and then you move on.I cannot comment on GIIS Pune, sincerely I don't know.
