Mumbai, January 30: The BCCI on Wednesday described the Australian media's attack on the 'reprieve' to Harbhajan Singh in the racial abuse case as "demeaning and insulting" to the office of the appeals commissioner while insisting that it was a "fair trial".

"As far as BCCI is concerned we went according to the ruling of the ICC. The ICC had appointed Appeals Commissioner Justice John Hansen who is a respected High Court judge in New Zealand. So to find fault and criticise his decision is demeaning and insulting to the office of the Appeals Commissioner," BCCI Chief Administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said.

The Australian media called it a 'Cricket's day of Shame' and reported that Cricket Australia caved in to India's muscle flexing as it was anxious to save the tri-series.

Reports also claimed the Australian players were "frustrated" and dismayed after Harbhajan got away with a fine.

"If India wanted to use its money power there would have been other ways to follow instead of following the procedure set up by the ICC," Shetty said.

"Judge's decision was based on the fact that there was no video or audio recording of the offensive words supposed to have been uttered by Harbhajan. Mike Procter's finding that Sachin Tendulkar could not have heard Harbhajan was also disapproved," he said.

Need to discipline Indian cricketers by P.P. TALWAR on 01 Feb 2008

By announcing its verdic by the the Appeals Commissioner appointed by the ICC, it has been clearly brought out that the past record of Harbhajan Singh being penalised for similar offences was not produced before the Appeals Commissioner. Had the past record been producd before the Appeals Commissioner, Harbhjan singh would have been penalisd more severely. This fact can not be denied by the BCCI. Without getting involved in unnecessary charges and counter charges, BCCI should strictly discipline Harbhajan singh also sreesanth whose behaviour on the cricket field is questionable. Harbhajan singh may have been let off lightly now, but this stigma of misbehaviour on the crickt field during international cricket matches will haunt him for the rest of his cricket career.

Disgraceful by Andrew on 01 Feb 2008

Australia is the world's proudest sporting nation, and its greatest cricketing nation. We come out of this row with our heads held high. It is clear now that racism is only possible when it is perceived by someone from the subcontinent. Indian cricket should be ashamed. Have you produced a wicketkeeper better than Gilly? A bowler better than Warne? Anyone better or even close to Bradman? No, you've only produced a bunch of pampered fools who are shocked to find themselves inferior to the baggy greens in every conceivable way, and respond by calling on racism and their country's financial clout. World cricket had better have a good look at itself, and soon. Because the BCCI may rule the game, but even it will find itself in trouble when the game dies

'Oz media demeaning Appeals Commissioner's office' by Rachna Josan on 01 Feb 2008

This tour has been extremely traumatising. The events that followed have further aggravated things and the non-acceptance of the judgement by teh Aussie-team is even further proof that if they do not get what they want, they will go all out to create a bad environment. They are certainly not a team worth playing with. World Champions, them? YEs, but not in cricket, they are so in being the cry baies and the most non-sportive players of the world. They have irredeemably demeaned the spirit of cricket. ICC should look into the attitude of Aussie cricketers and punish them suitably. The players have not once questioned themselves - who provked, how etc. All they think they heard is Bhajji saying something. And nothing else? Very convenient, isn't it? Grow up boys. BCCI was right in wanting to take the team back. Fair is fair, even if it hurts the Aussie team and their over-bloated egos.

Australian Cricket by Krishnan on 01 Feb 2008

Having read much of OZ media coverage of this "Seething-Symonds" fiasco, I agree with BCCI's views. Judge Hansen's sound judgment has not convinced the populist media here. From the start they paid no attention to Symonds' gratuitous and extreme provocation of Harbhajan. They assumed Harbhajan was guilty, had uttered the "M" word, which, to them,is clearly a racist word. Given the hatred towards Harbhajan, the victim marked out by Ponting-Symonds, I feel relieved the OZ media have so far not done to Bhajji what the OZ police did last week to Ian Ward, an aboriginal elder. They put the 53 year old in the back of an unventilated, windowless van and drove him for 4.5 hours to some court hearing. Ian Ward died, perhaps, a slow death due to asphixiation inside the van in 40 degrees heat. He arrived dead. Many aboriginals have died in Australian prisons, often found hanging in their prison cells. Amazing, isn't it this concern over the "M" word and the "appalling racism" implied by it? There is not going to be much joy for India playing this present Aussie team. Better to forget them.

Harbhajan by kamath on 01 Feb 2008

This is so true..I am in Australia right now and the news is so missleading they don't show the entire issue and only stress in things like Harbajan is free or The Judge side if he knew about his previous record he would have punished Harbhajsn more severly, it's just crazy they just keep provoking the Aussi people to take a action againt the Indian Team.

PENALISE SYMONDS,POINTINGS FOR MAKING FALSE ALLEGATIONS by Tina on 01 Feb 2008

BCCI-- SEEK COMPENSATION FROM AUSTRALIAN CRICKET FOR CAUSING STRESS TO HARBHAJAN AND OTHER INDIAN PLAYERS.NO FINE SHOULD BE PAID BY HARBHAJAN AS THE WORD USED BY HIM IS NOT FOUND IN THE ENGLISH DICTIONARY AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE CALLED OBSCENE.AND SO WHAT IF HE USED THE WORD MONKEY -- IT IS NOT A RACIAL SLUR IN OUR CULTURE IS THIS A PERSONAL ATTACK ON HARBHAJAN ????DEMAND PUNISHMENT IN THE FORM FO PENALTY FOR SYMONDS,POINTING ,HAYDEN,PROCTOR,CLARKE FOR FRAMING UP FALSE ALLEGATIONS . THEY FREQUENTLY USE 'F' AND 'B' ONFIELD-- THESE WORDS MAY BE COMMON REGULAR WORDS IN THEIR VOCABULORY -- BUT ARE OBSCENE TO US INDIANS .OUR PLAYERS ARE ALL DISCIPLNED AND DO NOT NEED ANY BEHAVIOUR ORDERS BE REGULAR IN THEIR VOCABULORY -- BUT IS OBSCENE TO US INDIANS

BOYCOTT AUSTRALIA by Mona on 01 Feb 2008

Australians should be boycotted from the IPL . BCCI now show ur power in fighting back these racist people.U definitely didn't show it earlier as there was no evidence found and case fell on its own.PLEASE DONT INCLUDE THE AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS IN THE IPL . IN FACT BOYCOTT PLAYING CRICKET WITH AUSTRALIA INSTEAD PLAY WITH PAKISTAN, SRI LANKA, BANGLADESH,SA,ENGLAND AND NEW ZEALAND AND OTHER LIKE MINDED COUNTRIES.

what rubbish by G on 01 Feb 2008

You hypocritical bunch of crying girls. When the first judgement was made your entire country acted like a bunch of spoilt little shits. Now that a judgeemnt in which the judge himeself said would have been more severe if the evidence was presented and you are calling us racist complainers. Oh my god your hypocracy is so thick its sickening you racists.

Boycott Australia by Krishnan on 01 Feb 2008

I support this call by Mona. India may well be justified in boycotting the Australian team, at least, in the next two years or so. Reconsider that decision only if the composition of the Aussie team changes, especially, the captaincy.

to Gavin by vishal on 31 Jan 2008

ROFL (rolling on floor laughing) Gavin - that is so funny and so true. But again, monkey is not a racist term in India ...India does not practice racism. Racism is a western concept. We may have indulged in name calling but it certainly was not racism. Besides the behavior of your own team has not really been what i would call "saintly". The only diference is this time your team got a TIT for all the TAT they have been subjecting all the other teams to over the years. So stop crying and take it like a man. Your comment abt the indians too poor to afford the tickets perched on the trees is hilarious though :-)

Balance please by Nathan on 31 Jan 2008

What is the problem with just being realistic? Australia is NOT the only team in world cricket that sledges, and if people are unable to discern the difference between general banter and racist comments, then they clearly do not have the mental capacity to form a valid opinion on the subject.Kartik was shown spitting at Clarke during the 4th test and nothing is said, but if an Australian spat at an indian there would be even more hysterical, self righteous outrage then we are currently seeing. This pretence that all Australians are uncouth racist barbarians, while all indians are gentle tolerant angels is just so ridiculous and so easily refuted. I won't go into that issue except to say that if Australia suffered from the religous violence, deaths, church burnings etc that take place in india, it would not be so easily swept under the carpet. I am saying that the people commenting on this story should get over their blinkered parochialism and judge each team by the same standards.

you are right by vishal on 01 Feb 2008

Nathan - I am an Indian and i completely agree with you. Both the teams are equally guilty. But the fans on both sides are behaving as if their team is all saint and the other team is all demon. As rational people we must see the evidence before our eyes and not be swept away by "parochialism". At least you have the satisfaction of knowing that your team can walk the walk. Our team only talks the talk.

ICC and Racism by vishv on 31 Jan 2008

It now seems that Mr Speed was out to get Harbhajan. Here is a passage from an Australian newspaper (The Age): International Cricket Council chief Malcolm Speed says the ICC accepts responsibility for the bungle which allowed Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh to escape possible suspension. It is time ICC officials stay clear of being participants in this row.

Sack Malcolm by BT on 31 Jan 2008

The ICC is supposed to be the governing body and make no mistake, Malcolm Speed was integral to Harbhajan having his suspension overturned to a fine. I have a theory that he instigated the bungle so Harbhajan could get away with a fine. Note that Australians want to see Malcolm Speed sacked more then you do.

Racist Australians by Tina on 31 Jan 2008

Please read below to get an idea of what the australians think of us:1)Boycott Indian ODIsPosted by: Chosen1, Melbourne, on 30/01/2008 5:57:20 PMIt's all well and good to sit here and bag the Indian team, but how many of you will end up going to an Indian ODI game over the next month? The best way to protest against the spineless CA and the blackmailing BCCI, is by not turning up to the matches involving India. I wholeheartedly agree that the Aussies need our support, but everyone needs to realise that not everything is about money. Make your voice heard and keep the BCCI from getting their grubby hands on your money. Boycott the Indian matches. 2)bcci no class at all!!Posted by: Chris Ellis, Perth, on 30/01/2008 5:50:59 PMRaja, if I called you jungle bunny you wouldent mind or 3rd world *** burger, no probs, not rascist, sure. How about bluddy idiot, just cause in india they have to put a cage up around the spectators, for lack of a better word, dosent mean it should happen here, If I was an indian I would move here to watch the cricket as they act no better than wild dogs.Grow up or go home.enough said!!

Please don't call me racist by BT on 31 Jan 2008

Opinions like this are out of fury and resentment for the way the whole incident has been handled. We have been accused of being cheats, dobbers, bad sports, whingers, sooks and no doubt other bad things.I plead for your sense of reason to understand that we have seriously felt that all this has been used as a personal attack at Australians. We are pretty laid back and easy going, but if you back us into a corner, we are gonna fight back swinging. If your opinion of Aussies is based on comments from my overzealous countrymen then please know that I have read many bad things written by Indians about Australia as well.Simple conclusion, neither party can call themselves saints over the incident.

to BT by vishal on 31 Jan 2008

BT ...i hear you and i assure you that not all indians are crazy, unreasonable and high strung like the people who are posting here. There are people in India who agree with Australia and as evidenced by various messages i have read on the internet, there are a lot of Australians out there who are supporting the Indian side. Every Individual will have his or her own take on the situation but we can all agree on one thing. This entire unfotunate episode has seriously damaged both India and Australia and the sooner we put it behind us the better we will all be. I think both teams should get together after the series and have a friendship match and all indians spectators and australian spectators should shake hands and hug each other and forget that this nastiness ever happend.

Ironic by Gavin on 31 Jan 2008

Does anyone else see the irony in an indian calling Symonds a monkey when a quick scan around any cricket ground in India will see thousands of Indians swinging one handed from the rafters and perched in nearby trees.

Lets sort this out on court of law. by Mat on 31 Jan 2008

I hope Harbhajan sues Mr Symonds for a defamation case. All these things will get sorted out once and for all. I loved the admired Australians and even Symonds was my favourite but fail to understand why Symonds and Aussies are not able to get on with the game. Come on Aussies!!! Lets move the clock backwards and enjoy the same friendship...

Irony and the otherwise by Manohar on 31 Jan 2008

Have n't you seen, My friend Mr.Gavin..! Symonds always preferred coming to the cricket ground with the get up aping monkey

How Sad! by Satish on 31 Jan 2008

How sad it is for Aussie fans! Well, ever heard the phrase "What goes around comes around"? Without any evidence of significance, the Aussie players went to convict Harbhajan. Are you stupid? No right minded judge would uphold that unless it is Mike Proctor who has been through Racism in South Africa. What a moron! Any action against Symonds? As both Harbhajan and Symonds utterd abuses and foul language? Let's see now how easy it is to sledge on Cricket ground. This is so called Australian culture. Well, my friends, welcome to the civilization. Symonds should realize that these very people (Ponting)whom he is trying to please, will some day hang him dry.

Some Ozzie are playing Injustice card to show themselves being morally better by DS on 30 Jan 2008

Ozzie media and some players by saying India has more clout and money are playing the INJUSTICE card and assert their moral upper hand. India better buckle up to sweept the T20 and 1 days. *****They cannot and should not experiment with selection initially. Bring in new players slowly and try the tried players that can win. Then bring in new pacers and batsmen.
