Ludhiana, January 25 Punjab Agricultural University will soon set up a specific network design for nearly 600 computers on its campus, whereby any networked computer can become a virtual supercomputer.

Prof O P Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Sciences, PAU, who has developed this design while working on his doctorate degree in Computer Sciences and Engineering said, “Any desktop can be converted into a virtual supercomputer by getting the power of other networked PC without affecting the power or working of the computer from where we steal the power.”  Prof Gupta is helping to set up the entire network.

He added, “In our day-to-day use of computers, we do not use more than 10% of the total power of the computer. People who are into graphic designing do not more than 15 % power. The network design that I have developed will help use power of another computer without disrupting the working of that computer. Thus, if we install such a programme we do not need supercomputers instead any ordinary desktop can work using other computer’s power.”

Prof Gupta has done in Masters in Computer Sciences from Thapar University in Patiala and is pursuing his Ph.D from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar.

The computer wizard further added, “This kind of networking is very important and helpful in fields of bioinformatics and biotechnology. A lot of work in these fields is done on computers that at times need very high power. Thus, even for these fields we do not need to buy high-powered computers. By using the power of other computers installed in departments where we are only using them for regular work, we can increase the power of the computers used in biotechnology and bio informatics.”
