Deoband (UP)/New Delhi On a day that Union Home Minister P Chidambaram was attending, the 30th general session of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind on Tuesday sparked off a controversy when one of the 25 resolutions passed by it asked Muslims not to recite the Vande Mataram, on the grounds that some verses of the national song are against the tenets of Islam.

“The fatwa of Darul Uloom (opposing recitation of the Vande Mataram) is correct,” said the resolution passed on Tuesday, referring to an edict passed in 2006 describing singing of the national song as anti-Islamic. Over 10,000 clerics from across the country adopted the resolution.

Criticising the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, the BJP has questioned the presence of Chidambaram at the function “after the resolution had been passed” as well as his failure to speak out against it.

While former BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi said the resolution against Vande Mataram was “against Constitutional provisions”, its Muslim face and party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Chidambaram’s silence was “a matter of concern”. The party said by keeping quiet, the Home Minister had legitimised the resolution.

The Jamiat resolution refers to a judgment of the Supreme Court “clearly stating that nobody can be compelled to sing the Vande Mataram”.

“Patriotism does not require singing of the Vande Mataram. We love our country and have proved this several times, but Vande Mataram violates our faith in monotheism that is the foundation of Islam,” the resolution said.

“We love and respect the mother, but do not worship her... The house demands that the issue of Vande Mataram should not be deliberately raised for causing communal discord and threat to law and order.”

The resolution also condemned what it called the exploitation of Vande Mataram for targeting Muslims.

Questioning this reasoning, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said: “It was a motivational song during the freedom struggle. It should be sung by every patriot.”

Naqvi asked why Chidambaram didn’t say anything on the issue even as he “spoke on the Babri demolition in his speech”.

Priest addresses meet, Ramdev does yoga

DEOBAND: Yoga guru Ramdev performed pranayam while Pandit N K Sharma recited Vedic hymns at the largest congregation of Muslim clerics of the country on Tuesday at the Darul Uloom Islamic seminary. It was the first time a Hindu religious figure had addressed the audience, primarily comprising Muslim clerics. More than two lakh clerics and students first listened attentively to Hindu religious texts dealing with peace, unity and brotherhood and then watched Ramdev do yoga. Incidentally, the 143-year-old influential seminary had in the past issued a fatwa in favour of yoga after some clerics banned Muslims from practising it. PTI

Patriotism hurt by Deb on 05 Nov 2009

If Vande Mataram is not sung by a community then that amounts to showing disrespect to the nation. This shows how these people are trying to create rifts between people who adhere to the faith of nationality and people who do not.Christinaity is also a monotheistic religion and it also primarily goes against any sort of idol worship. But Christians didn,t show any dissent against the national song.People who would speak or decline from singing our national song should be expelled from this country because of their unpatriotic nature.Islamists over thyears thathey hate this very system of democracy or multiculturalism which all other faiths have accepted to live in. Their very rigid nature and overall backwardness and along with few of our politicians countinously ignoring their misdeeds only to appease them will eventually prove to be detrimental for this country.

Mr. A.R. REHMAN composed music for this song... Just a song by Raj on 04 Nov 2009

His music added another dimension to it. These politicians are adopting Divide and Rule policy. They create problem for people of this nation, create problem with people of neighboring nations like Pakistan and China. They have no means to create Peace and Progress. They can not win in their own country, who will listen to them in foreign soil. DO not listen to them my friends.

Vande Mataram by Gouri on 04 Nov 2009

This is simply a non issue which is projected as an issue. Nobody is bothered who is pronouncing VANDE MATARAM or not. The glory of VANDE MATARAM never diminishes. Linking VANDE MATARAM with religious sentiments is a profitable business for the Congress, CPIM, CPI and BJP who have proved that end always matters for them, not the means.

Great Fatwa... by Abdul Raafi on 04 Nov 2009

Really its Great Fatwa.....Every Muslims should be very cleat about this....I expect more fatwa like this......

Need Action, not words. by Dusty Jasad on 04 Nov 2009

Love for the nation is action "DOING". Not singing or talking. I had a teacher is school who beat the Muslims boys black and blue for not singing Vande Mataram in the moring assembly. In end he was caught and convicted of leaking exam papers in return for money.

Not Anti-Islamic but no compulsion should be made, yes VM is reflecting hinduism by venky on 04 Nov 2009

VM is hindu patriotic song and that's why it was not put as national anthem. But the translation did not reflect anti-islamism in any way. I think the best solution to it is: -a) VM should not be compulsory anywhere.b) An urdu song may be selected and added as a national song with islamic reflections.c) Clarification may be sought on this fatwa so that hindu sentiments may not be disturbed.Chidambaram's silence could be a concern but replying immediately could be a bigger concern. Let's not complain him on this matter.

Rama and the Arab world by durrukh on 04 Nov 2009

Is the Arabic month RAMA DAN [RAMAZAN] a tribute to Rama???Is the second son of Noah [HAM] is the same person as RAM ??? like SIND is wrongly pronounced as HIND and finally transmitted to INDIA???[Geneology and brief history of the sons of Noah]

VM English translation by Aliex on 04 Nov 2009

Portion of Vande Mataram which Islam does not recognize...Vande Mataram song is embeded with Hindusim in it. But Islam does respects the views of this song.Thou art Durga, Lady and Queen, With her hands that strike and her swords of sheen, Thou art Lakshmi lotus-throned, And the Muse a hundred-toned, Pure and perfect without peer, Mother lend thine ear, Rich with thy hurrying streams, Bright with thy orchard gleems, Dark of hue O candid-fair

Vande Mataram is not anti-islamic or monotheism by vijay on 04 Nov 2009

Vande mataram cannot be considered to be anti-islamic because singing that you worship the figurative mother can also be considered as saying that you worship the figurative allah, if you merely consider the words only (allah and mother) as interchangable. The reasoning here is that any object of worship can also be considered as allah and therefore it is not anti-islamic.

Fatwa should be democratic in a democratic country by sandeep on 04 Nov 2009

Fatwa should be democratic in a democratic country like India,It only shows conservationist approach....Muslims are equal in India and this is the time(seeing the instability in region) we have to show more unity by not to bound to such narrow mind dividing power

Why force someone by Deepak on 04 Nov 2009

Patriotism, like religion , is a "value" created by humans. The constitution guaruntees all Indian citizens the right to freedom of speech though and relgion. Likewise, patriotisim is only true if it is born out of free though and not if it is forced onto someone. When the Indian costitution does not force us to beieve in God (or Gods or supreme entity or whatever you like to call it) why should someone be forced to show patriotism?

wht's happening by durai on 04 Nov 2009

i dont no what's there problem BY saying vande Mataram is there any reson today i have problem with Vande Mtaram

Bow to Mother (ie Nation) by Mahesh on 04 Nov 2009

There is no harm for Islamic person to sing Vande Mataram, it is song sing to motivate India freedom, when all indian song irrespective of their religion during freedom fith. Now why Islamic making this is issue, Vande Mataram mean "Bow to Mother" (here MOTHER IS NATION)and this will not misguide all humanity. So an indian should bow to Nation (Mother India). As Islamic believe in Monothesim, We Hindus also believe in one god, but only difference is we see the One GOD (Ishwar/Allah) in different form by different people. Vande Mataram is consider as National Song - BOW TO NATION and a small espect those freedom fighter who fought for india independence. Vande mataram is part of national festivity and Religion should not be dragged into such political/mundane things and make publicity of that.

Mr.Abdul Rahman...Very good to see ur comments... Appreciate ur patriotism..Also 1,2,3... are not arabic numbers they are Indian numerals which spread over the world thru Arabic traders

Religion not against nationality by Syed on 04 Nov 2009

Why mixup natioanlity with religion, Islam as a religion does on recognize land as an Godess or the Mother of Land generally pictured by Hindus as having several hands. So why create a fuss about it.

Ban this Fatwa system it irks true Indians a lot by Vardhan on 04 Nov 2009

I understand the difference between Jingoism and Patriotism so believe that singing or non singing of Vande Mataram is personal choice of every Indian but respecting it is his duty. But In a democratic country like ours a cheap religious institution "Ordering" people "not To Sing Vande Materam" is much below standards of free will and is itself stiring up communal hatred and should be banned in totality. This System of Issuing fatwa that contradicts the free will of people is unacceptable in Democracy. Whatever Allah had to convey to people he conveyed in Quran. Now its a personal juridiction of every free Indian and not the Domain of some relegious leader to be as wise as interpreting it. I would Openely like to ask all those who openly support this maniac fatwa what will they do If India goes on a war with nasty Pakistan when Quran says killing of true Islam followers should be avoided ?

Vande mataram by Indian on 04 Nov 2009

Every citizen of India should salute this song which is sung to our mother nation..no religion please..those who consider not to sing or respect this song can never be considered as a citizen of our nation..it is as simple as this

Fooilsh Perception by Indan too on 04 Nov 2009

Later you will make it compulsory to worship Nude to be citizen?Do not enforce religious rites on to others.

not going to do any good to any one by aashish on 04 Nov 2009

a country of 100 cr people, with more than 40% livin below poverty, with no food to eat n no home to live in, if these guys can stop fightin in the name of religion n politics we can actually do a lot for our country, a true patriotic is the one who wants to do good for his country, n a true religious leader is one who wants to do good to man kind,we can do all the "singing n not singing" after we have abolished poverty. I don know when will they understand this.

Muslim clerdies by BMLALL on 04 Nov 2009

Everybody knows that it is the duty of majority community not only to protect the minorities, rather it is the duty of every Indian to protect each other. I fail to understand why Mr Chidambran as Home minister could not ask the muslim clergies to respect the Indian Constitution and Indian values including singing of Vande Matram which inspired millions of people during freedom struggle. BMLALL

patriot by indian on 04 Nov 2009

If muslim feeeddom fighters can sing Vande Matram then why these people are objecting this today. Dont insult this holy song just for some publicity. We always talk of secularism but it should be followed by everyone in thie country. Secularism should not be duty to only majority. Minority should also obey this and follow.

We need to grow up now by Amit on 04 Nov 2009

the first thing here is that, i sing "vande maatram" does it mean i take incense sticks and go on to worship my motherland. Singing vande maatram is liking paying a tribute to the "maatribhoomi" , and there is no shame in being grateful to our motherland. The problem is that this whole concept of showing that we are not extinct and very active by doing stupid things is ridiculous. Its time they grow up and concentrate on some real issues, come to hyderabad see the poverty in the muslim population, if they really care spend half of what they spend all the fanfare in organizing that meet to help out some poor beggars through out India. Most of these helpless desperate people do not give a damn for there "fatwa". The same applies to the morons filled in MNS and RSS. Grow up, concentrate on the real issues. And if they are really worth, really make an effort to bring about some change in these people's life.

Another blunder by the Ulema by AH on 04 Nov 2009

Are they dumb? Don't they atleast learn from their mistakes? Don't they know about the diplomacy? if you don't want to worship the motherland so be it. Do you have to yell that from the top of your roof? Will the christians worship or sing the Vande matharam? Ofcourse they won't. But they are clever and silent about the matter and use this as a way to get back at muslims. if you don't want to do it don't do it. That does not make you less patriotic. More muslim blood has been shed than christian's for independence than John Jacobs and his likes think. I wonder how many Indian christian's heart were moved when this song was sung during the occupation of our country by their brethen.

Now these RAT BUMS are becomin Intolerable by Ravi G. on 04 Nov 2009

Today .... they are saying no to VANDE MATARAM ..... tomm. will ask to change the colour of our national flag ..... UPA .... is just sidlining .... all this stupidity .... for their vote bank .

WHEN ULEMAS TRY TO REPLACE ALLAH by RAFA on 04 Nov 2009

These Ulemas are responsible for creating this version of ISLAM which is intolerant, narrow minded, unadjusting and violent. All the good work done in the past becomes meaningless when such a Fatwa is issued.

True Patriotism by Intekhab Alam on 04 Nov 2009

I don't belive that singing Vande Matram is patriotism out of total population even 10% can't sing it rightly but everyone is concerned. The more concern should be eradicating poverty to bring harmony and allround developement of the country. We are unnecessary creating debate on issue which is ultimately creating diffrences. We should further pledge to work together for the development of country. But it is very unfortunate that even in 21st century we are far behind against other countries and it is all because of our mutual diffrences What PC has done is good he is not giving that importance to that matter rather working hard for the internal security of India. We as a citizen should support the government rather pulling the government. We should stop the religious, cast, and language biase untill and unless we as a citizen should stop this we will not be able to built strong and safe India.
