‘PGI eye care centre a role model’

Chandigarh, March 18 The second Founder’s Day of the Advanced Eye Care Centre at the PGI was observed here today. While inaugurating a CME on the occasion, PGI director Prof K K Talwar said, “The eye centre is the face of the PGI. It is a role model to be followed by one and all.”

Dr Anita Agarwal, one of the leading retina specialists from the Vanderbilt Eye Institute, Nashville, USA, delivered the lecture on ‘Legacy of Donald Gass’. A number of leading ophthalmologists from various sub-specialties in India participated in the CME programme.

Dr S P Garg, Dr Pardeep Venketesh and Dr Dinesh Talwar from AIIMS, Delhi delivered lectures on specialised topics. Dr H K Tiwari, Dr Lalit Verma, Dr Manish Nagpal, Dr Mahipal Sachdev from Ahmedabad and Dr V Sangwan from Hyderabad also participated in the day’s proceedings.

Discussions were held on the advancements in corneal transplant, glaucoma, fungal keratitis, paediatric cataract surgery, retinopathy of pre-maturity, intraocular tuberculosis and eyelid tumours among others.

On the occasion, three employees of the centre — Arun Kapil, Ophthalmic photographer, sister Jagjit and Reena Kumari, technician, were honoured for their devotion to the work.

In the past one year, new facilities like biochemistry and a molecular research labs and new operation theatre have been added to the centre.

Meanwhile, to promote eye donation, a photo gallery was set up on the occasion by Swadesh Talwar, Regional Photo Editor of The Indian Express. Dr Suchita and Juginder Luthra from the USA donated a wi-fi cyber library and Dr Shubh and Omi Gupta from the UK contributed a doctors’ lounge.

Nearly 1,60,000 patients visited the centre in one year, out of which nearly one lakh made use of the various sub-specialty services of the department. A total of nearly 6,000 major and 12,000 minor procedures were carried out. 11 members of the faculty and residents won awards and honours. The faculty of the department published 39 research papers in various peer-reviewed journals.
