Chandigarh, February 15 Delegates and speakers from 15 countries gathered at the PGI today to participate in a three-day international conference on medical and community genetics. The conference is being organised by the Department of Hematology.

While Prof Alan Bittles spoke on the recent concerns and public reservations regarding the field of medical genetics, Prof Bittles, adjunct professor of community genetics and comparative genomics in Australia, highlighted the fact in his talk that despite accumulation of a large body of genetic information in diseases like cystic fibrosis, the treatment is still palliative. “Newer research methodologies relating to matching genes with their expected manifestations would have an impact on health in the developing nations, however the absence of validated prevalence data of diseases would prove to be a hindrance,” he said.

Prof IC Verma from Delhi provided data to show that contrary to the popular belief, India had a high number of genetic diseases with nearly 7.8 lakh new cases of congenital malformations reported every year.
