Chandigarh, January 31 The State Consumer Disputes Commission has directed PGIMER to pay Rs 5.8 lakh as compensation to Bimla Devi, a city resident.

According to the Bimla Devi’s complaint, her husband Inder Pal had been admitted to PGI on March 19 last year.

Her husband had been complaining of chest pain, she said. He was diagnosed with a serious heart problem and was discharged on March 25 after medication. Doctors at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) prescribed a by-pass surgery for him. The doctors said the surgery would cost Rs 1.57 lakh.

The money, stated complainant Bimla Devi, was deposited with the department concerned at PGIMER, but Inder Pal was not given any date for surgery by the doctors.

Bimla Devi said her husband visited the hospital a number of times asking the doctors to fix a date for his operation but to no avail.

He died of a heart attack on June 19, 2006.

As a reply to her petition, the PGI had stated that Inder Pal was irregular with treatment. The hospital also maintained that Pal had started taking treatment from some other institute. After the case had been decided by Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum I, the PGI had moved the commission seeking relief. The commission, however, complied with the earlier orders.
