PIL seeks filling up of consumer forum posts

Chandigarh, January 15 The High Court has issued notices to Haryana over a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) demanding immediate filling up of vacant posts of presidents in various consumer forums in Haryana.

The petitioner, Devinder Kaushik, resident of Ambala, has sought directions for appointing presidents in 12 district consumer forums in the state. The posts have been lying vacant since August 2007.

As per the Act, forums have to decide complaints within 90 days. The State government has to advertise the posts at least three months before the vacancy arises. In Haryana, there are 19 district consumer forums. Out of 19, four posts of presidents in Ambala, Sonepat, Narnaul and Rewari have been lying vacant since August 2007.

On the other hand, eight districts in which posts are lying vacant since first week of January, 2008, are: Panchkula, Kurukshetra, Yamuna Nagar, Panipat, Kaithal, Hisar, Bhiwani and Sirsa.
